Narrative
Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission
1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives
As of 2014, The American Sociological Association uses a five-point statement to define sociology.
This includes (1), that sociology is “the study of society”; (2) “a social science involving the study of
the social lives of people, groups, and societies”; (3) “the study of our behavior as social beings,
covering everything from the analysis of short contacts between anonymous individuals on the
street to the study of global social processes”; (4) “the scientific study of social aggregations, the
entities through which humans move throughout their lives”; (5) “an overarching unification of all
studies of humankind, including history, psychology, and economics” (www.asanet.org). To this end,
the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer degree provides social science courses to prepare
students for pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in Sociology at a California State University.
Program Goals:
The Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer includes broad overview introductory cultural social
science courses, a variety of lower division sociology courses, and social research. Themes of focus
within these courses include a primary focus on socio-political process such as the law, socialization,
and social institutions. Baccalaureate programs that the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer
degree prepares students for includes Sociology or similar majors such as Criminal Justice or Social
Work. Upon completion of the degree, students will demonstrate developed sociological
imagination. This includes ability to identify connections between macro level social structural
forces and individual social experiences. Upon completion of the degree students will be able to
propose potential solutions to social problems.
Program Outcomes:
1. Use sociological imagination or socio-historic perspective to describe social reality,
phenomena, experience, or change.
2. Demonstrate understanding of basic social theories, social research ethics and tools, and
the characteristics of social inequalities.
3. Provide examples to illustrate theoretical sociological concepts.
4. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
2. Catalog Description
A student may earn an Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer pending CCCCO approval. The
Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a
bachelor’s degree in Sociology at a CSU Campus. Students completing the Associate in Arts in
Sociology for Transfer degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular
campus or major. This preparation includes the following student learning outcomes:
1. Use sociological imagination or socio-historic perspective to describe social reality,
phenomena, experience, or change.
2. Demonstrate understanding of basic social theories, social research ethics, and the
characteristics of social inequalities.
3. Provide examples to illustrate theoretical sociological concepts.
4. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept the Associate in Arts in Sociology for
Transfer will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s
degree. To meet the requirements for this degree the students must:
1. Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University,
including both of the following:
a. Complete the California State University General Education‐Breadth pattern (CSU GE
Breadth); OR the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
pattern.
b. A minimum of 18 semester units in the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer
degree.
2. Obtain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
To complete the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer degree, students must earn a C or better
in required courses for the major. A P (Pass) grade is not acceptable for courses in this degree.
Students completing the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer degree are guaranteed admission
to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus
that does accept the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer will be required to complete no more
than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. The Associate in Arts in Sociology for
Transfer degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU
campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In all cases, students should
consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.

The units indicated in the template are the minimum semester units required for the prescribed course or list. All courses must be
CSU transferable. All courses with an identified C-ID Descriptor must be submitted to C-ID prior to submission of the
Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) proposal to the Chancellor’s Office.

Attach the appropriate ASSIST documentation as follows:
• Articulation Agreement by Major (AAM) demonstrating lower division preparation in the major at a CSU;
• CSU Baccalaureate Level Course List by Department (BCT) for the transfer courses; and/or,
• CSU GE Certification Course List by Area (GECC).
The acronyms AAM, BCT, and GECC will appear in C-ID Descriptor column directly next to the course to indicate which report
