Student Development Assessment Group Notes Friday, July 13, 10:00-11:00 1. Update on assessment web work - Cheryl has access to the assessment reporting site tool to load and edit outcomes for student development area; Sept 7 is the closing date to edit past outcomes - Need to clean up the course outcomes that are mixed up with the student development programs (only Angelina or Paul has access – Cheryl will send list) 2. Shared outcomes Objectives: Develop tools for advising basic skills students; Align matriculation processes with Student Success Task Force recommendations Outcomes: New matriculating students will register in appropriate courses for their English placement level (SLO); counselors and advisors will be knowledgeable about best practices for advising basic skills students (PO) Assessment tool: Suggested course success list for basic skills students from IR – recommended, not recommended (do we also need recommended with reservation?) Assessment method: Compare number of new, matriculating students who placed into Read 360 and Engl 350 and registered for recommended courses vs not recommended (use last year as baseline?) Activities: - Work with IR to develop recommended and not recommended course list (based on success rates, minimum number for validation, at least three years of reliable data???) Research best practices for developmental advising Staff development for all counselors and advisors to utilize recommended course report and review best practices for developmental advising 3. Two year assessment planning cycles - Need to set deadline for pros and cons to two year cycle – we originally had 5 year plans to coincide with comprehensive program review cycle; two years is probably more realistic; two years lines up with what instruction is doing 4. Structure of summer assessment retreat for Student Dev. proposed that our assessment retreat be held on Friday, August 3rd from 1-4 in the afternoon and that we close our departments so that all staff may attend The following topics are suggested: Two year assessment plans Shared outcomes - Communication Management - Basic Skills Student Advising Tools - Other Closing the Loop (what it is, why we do it, and how to document what we did through our web assessment reports) Alignment with institutional planning We also discussed having Roxanne come and go over the brief overview of planning to help us better articulate the process for ourselves and the visiting team 5. Mapping to GE outcomes - Discussed ways in which we could map to current GE outcomes (i.e. critical thinking)
