Educational Pathways Task Force Meeting Friday March 14, 2014 9am – 10:30 SS 104 Counseling Conference Room DRAFT Agenda/Notes Attendees: Jay Dragten, Peter Blakemore, Erin Wall, MaryGrace McGovern, Keith Snow-Flamer, Erik Kramer Final review of Potential criteria/indicators for submission to the Senate The attendees reviewed the potential list of criteria to guide to the guide faculty and administrative decision making relative to future Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT). The list was revised slightly for clarification. Criteria include: 1. If one of our main feeder CSUs (HSU, Chico State, Sacramento State) has a major and a TMC exists 2. If approximately 75% of courses called for in the TMC already exist 3. If courses in an ADT support enrollment in other courses/disciplines/areas (e.g. the ADT in Kinesiology supports enrollment in biology, chemistry) 4. If the ADT has courses that “ overlap” with other degrees for multiple “on ramps and off ramps” for students to select other degree pathways 5. If students are taking a concentration of a particular ADT’s courses within a current local degree. 6. If the FTES/FTEF, success rates, program completions (number of graduates) are projected to be above the district average 7. If the ADT aligns with local and/or regional job market expectations 8. If the ADT provides a broad educational “experience” that compliments an ADT for specific majors It’s important to note that the task force cautioned that the decision to develop an ADT should not be predicated on past or current enrollment or student education plan data since having an ADT may impact enrollment trends for a particular discipline. Also, the SEP initiative (with the exception of EOPS) is not yet fully implemented. Discussion of what we do with localized degrees when an ADT is approved for development The task force discussed what to do with localize degrees if an ADT is developed and what to do with degrees and certificates that are on the books, but with no or very few graduates. The task force thought that faculty and administrators should include the following data and criteria in reviewing localized degrees for relevance: 1. the number of degrees and certificates available 2. the number of completers 3. the potential number of completers based on SEP and/or selection of a major data from the orientation process 4. whether market data/employment data support continuation of a degree and/or certificate Discuss our approach to satisfying SB440 It’s still unclear how the Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) will interpret SB440. It was mentioned that the CCCCO may expect community colleges to develop at least 4 ADT that correspond to an Area of Emphasis (AOE). The task force’s initial thoughts on an approach for development of a SB440/AOE related ADT is to develop an AOE ADT if the more specific ADT (SB1440) is too narrow for student completion and if the AOE ADT will be a benefit to students after they transfer. The task force discussed: 1) the need to develop an interdisciplinary ADT; 2) sunsetting the Liberal Arts AOE in Math since the ADT in Math covers the similar courses; 3) developing an ADT in Behavioral 1 and Social Science AOE; 4) developing an ADT is Humanities and Communications AOE ; and 5) developing a combined ADT in Science and Science Exploration AOE. The Articulation Officer will share further guidance on ADTs after he returns from the Articulation Officer meeting.
