College of the Redwoods Health Occupations Department Core Clinical Faculty Job Description Core clinical faculty administer and manage all aspects of a clinical rotation. The core clinical faculty provide content expertise and must be certified by the California State Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and/or California State Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). The duties listed below require time and work beyond the contract and are in addition to all the administrative responsibilities required for the theory portion of the course. Typically each major nursing course (N21-N24) requires two core clinical faculty and each major LVN course (LVN 121-123) requires one. The core clinical faculty’s responsibilities include: 1. Working with College of the Redwoods Director of Nursing and Health Occupations and Assistant Director of Nursing to identify potential clinical associate faculty who meet BRN and/or BVNPT standards and complete the hiring process in a timely manner. 2. Analyzing student performance in the previous semester to identify optimal clinical learning experiences for each student (clinical and didactic). 3. Developing clinical schedules that allow each student to meet course, program and BRN/BVNPT requirements, taking into account agency resources, student characteristics (per analysis). Coordinating clinical placements with other programs and colleges. 4. Conducting and documenting pre-clinical student competence in meeting agency requirements. These competencies include, but are not limited to point of care testing (blood glucose, etc.), electronic medical record user competence, and corporate compliance (use of restraints, ethical/legal policies, OSHA, emergency preparedness, etc.). Core Clinical Faculty provide an attestation that all students and faculty meet agency requirements. 5. Developing new sites, clinical experiences; and training agency nursing staff, clinical preceptors, and mentors to work with students. 6. Coordinating all aspects of clinical orientation each semester for all students and returning clinical faculty which includes online and face to face components. Clinical orientation often involves several 6-8 hour training sessions to meet all professional requirements. 7. Creating and maintaining policies and procedures related to clinical learning. 8. Managing complicated student issues related to patient care and safety in the clinical setting and providing support to associate clinical faculty when dealing with unprofessional behaviors, patient-student risks, discipline, etc. 9. Coordinating pre and post clinical agency conferences with agency staff as required by BRN/BVNPT. 10. Orientation and training of new clinical associate faculty to clinical teaching methodologies and agency policies and procedures. A stipend of $1500.00 per core faculty per semester is requested to support job responsibilities that are not included in the faculty contract.
