College of the Redwoods INSTRUCTIONAL COUNCIL NOTES 08/03/15 DEAN UPDATES: Joe Hash – Annual Sports Auction is Thursday 08/13 and tickets are still available. The new ECE fulltime faculty, Darius Kalvaitis is moving into his new office today. Allison Stull is back from her summer break. Connie Carlson ‐ associate faculty contracts are currently being corrected, updated, etc. If any Deans get feedback from contracts, that information needs to go directly to Connie. Many associate faculty have been taking the Canvas training to prepare for the fall semester. Associate faculty mailboxes are now located in Connie’s area. She has the Associate Faculty Orientation scheduled for Saturday 09/12 and would like each Dean’s support. Erin Wall – the new fulltime English faculty, Nicole Bryant Lescher, is moving into her new office shortly. She is still looking for several associate faculty. Marla Gleave – her office is getting ready for the fall semester with several office and computer moves. Her new fulltime CT faculty, Derek Glavich, is moving into his new office shortly. Allison Stull –is back from her summer break. She will be attending the Board of Registered Nursing meeting in San Francisco this week to discuss the consultant’s findings, one area of noncompliance. Rory Johnson – the new fulltime Hist/Polysc faculty, Will Meriwether, has arrived and an office is being readied for him. He discussed the telepresence upgrades to the rooms in DN; hope to be ready for the fall semester. CRDN will be entering into an MOU with the Small Business Development Center. They will be having a presence on campus, hopefully to help boost enrollment and act as a bridge between non‐credit and credit students. Tracey Thomas – the new Dean of MSBSS is Dave Bazard and he will be starting immediately. Tracey will work with him during the transition. Cindy and Tracey hung the new Emergency Procedures posters in the Humanities and Sciences buildings. Cathy Cox – discussed the new telepresence rooms in DN and the upgrades in the EKA room. Reno has been holding Canvas training sessions and they have been thoroughly booked. Please remind your faculty that the content/format for their classes does not transition/archive automatically from Sakai to Canvas. Have them contact Reno with any questions. Sheila Hall – student orientations are still happening and due to that enrollment in the GS classes are expected to increase. There has been a lot of work done over the summer for the SSSP planning. This week Retention Alert training with a Datatel rep has been taking place with both staff and some faculty taking part. Sheila is still looking for some associate faculty for the GS classes. Her department is currently recruiting for a Student Retention Manager and a Counselor/Articulation Officer. Ron Waters – he will be attending a POST meeting in Sacramento. He has been scheduling a lot of mandated training classes for the fall. SCHEDULE REVIEW The Spring 2016 first draft has been sent out to the Deans/Directors for first review. Changes/updates are due back to Tiffany Schmitcke no later than August 28th. Mark would like to review the scheduling process to see what’s already working well in addition to what can be improved upon. He is unclear from where the original draft schedule data and information is obtained. He doesn’t see a direct connection between EMC and the Deans scheduling procedures. He would like to see a more defined line between EMC and the impact the committee has on scheduling. There was discussion of the pros and cons regarding how/when/why Administrators/Managers are assigned to teach a class in addition to their current role. Mark has been tasked with creating an internal document that would address this issue. The CRFO contract only states that “occasionally” it can happen, but doesn’t define occasionally. CONVOCATION SCHEDULE REVIEW A draft was handed out and discussed. There is still room to add topics and breakout sessions. There will be tech training, including Canvas and telepresence. The key note speaker will focus primarily on the math and English acceleration programs we are currently implementing on campus. She will also discuss mindsets and the importance of how we engage our students. Campus Climate – there is a breakout session scheduled to discuss this topic. Mark would like feedback regarding how best to address this in a positive and forward moving way. This is a heavy topic and the makeup of the group leading this breakout session is vital to it being a positive experience, one that improves everyone’s professionalism. Campus Safety – there will be a session on just this topic. The goal is for the audience to walk away with useful tools for dealing with a variety of scenarios on campus (violence/harassment). STUDENT SUSPENSION The disruptive student has been suspended but he is appealing. Mark outlined the steps to the appeals process. It is illegal to record any conversation, including a class lecture, unless all parties give consent ahead of time. Everyone appreciated the openness of how this is being handled. STUDENT BUSS PASS INITIATIVE Bus passes will be available to all CR students (currently enrolled) at half price. They can be purchased in the Bookstore.
