University Rule 33.99.08.P1 Student Employment
The University Rule 33.99.08.P1 Student Employment has been approved and will
become effective Monday, March 17, 2014. This rule was created in accordance with
System Regulation 33.99.08 Student Employment. The purpose of this rule is to define
student employees, list student employment provisions, note wage rate considerations,
summarize work-study program requirements, and introduce the right a student
employee has to file a grievance/appeal.
Key changes that impact departments employing student workers and/or graduate
assistants are listed below.
Student Workers
1. Student employees holding the student worker title of Federal College WorkStudy Student (Title Code 7560), Student Hourly (Title Code 7561) or Texas WorkStudent (Title Code7557) may not work more than 20 hours per week.
2. Student employees need not be enrolled during the summer terms, to maintain
student employee status, as long as the student has enrolled during the
preceding spring semester and registered for the following fall semester.
3. Student employees may not be considered for non-student positions if they are
enrolled as a full-time student at the university. They must be hired under an
applicable student worker title code.

4. Student employees classified as student workers may not work beyond the last
day of each term as determined by the Student Employment Office (SEO).
5. Student hourly employees may not hold both a work-study and a student hourly
position simultaneously.
Graduate Assistants
1. Graduate Assistants Non-Teaching (students holding Title Code 9180) may work
up to 25 hours per week (the equivalent of 62.5% work effort). This is a change
from the previous maximum of 35 hours per week (the equivalent of 88% work
effort) previously allowed. Effective March17, 2014 all newly hired graduate
assistants with the title of Graduate Assistant Non-Teaching will be hired under
the new rule of 25 hours per week.
2. All Graduate Assistants Non-Teaching that are currently working 35 hours per
week for the Spring 2014 term may continue working at 88% work effort through
the end of the Spring term. However, the work effort must decrease to 62.5% for
the next appointment period. An EPA action of “Change, Salary Title or Term” will
need to be initiated for current Graduate Assistants Non-teaching to reflect
62.5% for the next appointment period to begin in the Summer or Fall.
3. Graduate Assistants (Teaching and Research) and graduate assistants holding
an F-1 (student) visa may not work more than 20 hours per week (the equivalent
of 50% work effort).
4. Participation in the graduate assistantship program requires that the applicant
meet satisfactory academic progress criteria.
5. Graduate students must satisfactorily meet the academic progress requirements
and be enrolled for a minimum of nine (maximum of twelve) semester hours in a
course of study leading to a recognized educational objective.
In addition, student employees of PVAMU have the right to file a grievance and/or
complaint concerning conditions of employment or treatment by management,
supervisors, or other employees under the new rule in accordance with System
Regulation 32.01.02 Complaint and Appeal Process for Non-faculty Employees, and
University Administrative Procedures 32.01.02.P1 Complaint and Appeal Process for NonFaculty Employees. As part of the University’s commitment to diversity, all employing
departments share a responsibility in creating and maintaining a workplace free from
discrimination, sexual harassment, and/or related retaliation.
Questions related to the new rule may be directed to the Student Employment Office
at Ext. 1793 or seo@pvamu.edu and/or the Office of Human Resources at Ext. 1730 or
