Spring Break: What’s a Student Leader to Do?

For many campuses spring break is right around the corner. Student leaders should see this calendar break as an opportunity to step away from the crazy schedules and responsibilities that often occupy your calendars and personal time.

In addition, spring break is a great opportunity to identify a few things that you would like to “catch up on” before classes resume. Consider some of these possibilities to fill your spring break:

S

P

Service – Volunteer in your community. Donate your skills and time to an organization or individual(s) that could use a helping hand. Or, if it isn’t too late, join a campus service trip.

R

I

Play – Take this time to just have fun. Get together with friends, laugh and relax!

Resume – When was the last time you updated your resume? Take an hour over the break to review and revise by adding any new experiences and skill sets.

Integrity – Take some time to reflect on your integrity as a student leader. Are you walking your talk in your actions and decisions?

Gather – As a student leader you probably find it challenging to get together with family and friends as much as you would like. Gather the troops and enjoy some social time with loved ones.

Books – Read for fun. Read for pleasure. Read about leadership, or read your own journal. Just pick up a book that isn’t defined as a “textbook.”

Reflect – Find some quiet time over the break to take a walk, or retreat to a room and just think. Reflect on the past, what lies ahead or what you hope for your future.

Leadership Reflection…

Your Personal Priorities

What are your personal priorities for your break time? Consider what you want to accomplish related to…

FAMILY/FRIENDS:

A

Energize – One of the main reasons we take “breaks” is to re-energize and rejuvenate. Whether it is through time with friends and family, activities, quiet time or staying busy, identify ways that you can return to classes with a little extra skip in your step.

K

Apply – Are you hoping to land a summer job or internship? Spring break is a great time to get those applications completed and turned in.

Keep it Real – Design your break the way YOU want it. Don’t let a lack of organization, guilt from others or pressure to accomplish too much stop you from making the most of YOUR break.

FUN:

FUTURE (YOURS!):

If you accomplish nothing else, try to carve out time to make these three happen!
