Minutes of the Math Club Meeting of Monday, 10/13/2008
1.
Members were greeted by Mihail and were invited to dine on the food provided
by Mahwah Pizza and Pasta
2. While eating, Mihail introduced the high school math competition problem on the
board to be solved:
A triangular number is one, which is the sum of the first positive n integers. An
equidigit number is one all of whose digits are equal to one another.
List all 3-digit equidigit triangular numbers.
3. Dr. Potocka updated the club on the community service tutoring on and off
campus. The off campus tutoring center has not yet begun its sessions, therefore
we must wait till we get the ok from Dr. Potocka. On campus tutoring sessions
are continuing to meet on a weekly basis. There is a calculus 4 session each
Wednesday from 3:00 – 3:30 in G119 with Fadi and Analysis sessions each
Monday from 3:40 – 4:10 in G119. Some students have expressed interest in
sessions for Linear Algebra. We are currently looking for someone to run that
session.
4. Dr. McMurdy gave an update on the Putnam exam. Review sessions take place
every Thursday from 8 – 10 PM in G220. Sign ups for the Putnam have ended
but you do not need to be signed up to take the exam to attend the review sessions
5. Corinne updated the club on the progress of Pi Mu Epsilon. Members were
reminded to e-mail Corinne or Emily to put their names on the charter or interest
list.
6. Mihail told club members about our plan for the next meeting to bring high school
teachers to speak and answer questions about math and teaching. If members
have specific questions that they want answered, they should email Bonnie at
bchen1@ramapo.edu before the end of the week.
7. Members discussed the prospect of an off campus trip to the Liberty Science
Center on November 11th. Tickets will be sold at Roadrunner Center for about
$5.
8. After solving the math problem on the board, members split off into two teams
and played a rousing game of “Math Pictionary.” After six rounds, Team 2 won
4-2!
