Cameron students receive scholarships for
international study
Cameron University has awarded British Studies Scholarships to three students who will spend part of the
summer furthering their education by participating in academic programs overseas. William Kyle Bolton of
Grandfield, Margaret Hanna of Lawton and Bianca Rubio of Lawton will each receive a $1,650 scholarship.
Hanna is also the recipient of a $1,000 Study Abroad grant from Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest, largest
and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines.
“International study is a great asset to any student’s academic endeavors, providing new perspectives,”
said Dr. Von E. Underwood, CU Dean of Liberal Arts and British Studies Coordinator. “The cost of
participating in overseas programs is on the rise, and the volatility of exchange rates can put these students
on an extremely tight budget. At Cameron, we do our best to support students with financial aid to
encourage them to focus on their chosen program of study. This small group of scholarships provides
support that is essential if these deserving students are to pursue this exciting and potentially life-changing
educational experience.”
Hanna, a junior majoring in Biology, will take part in the British Studies Program in London this summer,
taking a course entitled “Medical Practice, Past Present and Future.” With a career interest in physical
therapy, she is a Cameron PLUS Scholar who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in her academic
endeavors. In her scholarship application, Hanna wrote, “The great diversity and integration of cultures in
the city of London give medical practices such a unique application. I am confident that taking this course
will greatly enhance both my thought process and perspective on medicine as a future physical therapist.”

“Phi Kappa Phi sets high standards for its award recipients,” Underwood said of Hanna’s Study Abroad
grant. “Margaret received one of only 50 awards from the 350 applications that Phi Kappa Phi received.
This is a testament to her academic excellence, her involvement on campus and in the community, and her
leadership ability.”
Rubio, a senior pursing a degree in business administration with an emphasis in economics and a Cameron
PLUS scholar, will study international economics and finance this summer in London. Her course of study
will include field trips to the Bank of England, Lloyd’s of London and the British Parliament in order to
observe British and European economic systems at work. Referring to the course as ‘the adventure of a
lifetime,” Rubio wrote in her scholarship application that participating in the program will be a great step in
reaching her ultimate goal of becoming an international lawyer.
Bolton, a senior majoring in International Languages, is undertaking an extensive international trip over the
summer, beginning with an archaeological dig at the Chateau de Walhain, a medieval castle in Belgium,
with excursions to Paris, London, Wales and other locations. In his application, Bolton explained his
program choice by writing, “Belgium is a diverse country linguistically as it contains French, Dutch and
German populations, and will present an interesting study in how multiple languages can coexist in one
country.”
He will follow that month-long program with a visit to India, where he will develop his linguistic skills in
Hindi, Urdu and Farsi.
