Cameron professor and students present at
national instructional media conferences
Cameron University multimedia design Associate Professor Abbas Johari, Ph.D. and five CU students have
been selected to present research findings at two national educational multimedia and visual literacy
conferences.
Johari and students Annette Moulder, Jamie Crow, and Richard Tillman attended the 38th Annual
Conference of the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) in Fort Worth, TX, Oct. 6-9. The
Cameron contingent presented research findings “How to Use Eye Tracker to Enhance Captivate-only
Instructional Procedures.” Eye Tracker is a software device that records eye movement. The CU
researchers are using this technology to improve online computer software tutorials.
“The device looks similar to eye glasses. While the learner is wearing the device and watching the
instruction, we can determine where his or her eyes focus on the screen and what areas are flawed or
cause distractions,” said Johari.
Johari also attended the board committee sessions, as he is a member of the IVLA board of directors and
the chair of the IVLA publication committee.
Following the IVLA conference, Johari and students Annette Moulder and Jason Cobb will attend the
Association for Educational Communications and Technology Annual Convention in Dallas, TX, Oct. 10-14.
While there, the group will present the results of a research study on online task learning via video-based

procedures.
“This research deals with developing effective procedures to assist people in learning computer skills online
via on-screen video-based procedural tutorial,” said Johari.
Johari will also attend an editorial session as one of the editors of Educational Technology Research and
Development journal. Moulder will join Johari for this session as she assisted him with editorial duties.
Johari also said the conferences will provide the CU students an opportunity to present their work and
interact with peers, top researchers and industry professionals.
Johari is a recipient of a Cameron Scholarly Research fund award that supported the EyeTracker research
and also received a grant from the Public Service Company of Oklahoma Endowed Lectureship in
Instructional Technology and Multimedia Design to support the research study of online task learning via
video-based on-screen procedures.
