McArthur selected as VP for Academic Affairs
President Cindy Ross is proud to announce that John M. McArthur, Ph.D., has been selected as Cameron
University’s Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA).
McArthur is a professor and current Dean of the School of Science and Technology. He will assume his
new post on Aug. 1.
“Dr. McArthur brings impeccable academic credentials to this most important academic position,” Ross
said. “Dr. McArthur is familiar with Cameron and possesses a breadth of solid university experience at
three universities. He has a distinguished record of teaching and research including publications and
scholarly works in multiple disciplines. I am confident he will excel as the university’s chief academic
officer.”
“I am honored to have been selected as Vice President for Academic Affairs for Cameron University,”
McArthur said. “I hope to continue the great legacy of leadership already established in this office, and
assist our faculty as they provide a quality education to our students.”
McArthur began his academic career as a National Merit Scholar. He holds an undergraduate degree in
mathematics from Rice University and went on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees from the
University of Colorado at Boulder. McArthur served on the physical sciences faculty of Southeastern
Oklahoma State University in Durant from 1993-2001, and chaired its computer science and technology
department from 1999-2001. He was a mathematics professor at Colorado State University-Pueblo, where
he chaired its departmental mathematics curriculum committee, before moving to Cameron in 2004.

Professionally, McArthur is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association
of America and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
He is a past member of the Educational Leadership Academy for Outstanding Professors in Oklahoma and
was member of the Technology 2000 panel, an advisory group for the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher
Education that investigated distance learning options in physical science available to the state’s
undergraduate institutions.
McArthur will replace Gary Buckley, Ph.D., who will return to the classroom and assume a full-time teaching
schedule.
Karla Oty, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics and current chair of the Cameron University
Department of Mathematical Sciences, will serve as Interim Dean of the School of Science and
Technology. Dr. Oty was named Outstanding Professor of the Year this past spring at Cameron. The
search will commence soon to fill the dean position.
