Cameron University’s athletic director resigns,
but thankful for experience, opportunity at CU
Samuel L. Carroll announced today he is resigning as athletic director, effective May 31. Carroll will
assume a new position in Oklahoma City.
“I am very grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had here at Cameron University,” Carroll said. “I have
enjoyed being associated with such a fine institution. Though my 15 years at Cameron have been a
tremendous experience, I feel as if it is in my family’s best interest to pursue other opportunities at this
time.”
Carroll, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cameron, joined the staff in 1990 as the
director of the CU Fitness Center. He served as director until 1996 when he was named athletic director by
then-President Don Davis.
“Sam’s commitment to Cameron’s student athletes has been unwavering,” said Cameron President Cindy
Ross. “His first criterion in considering any decision has been how it would affect the students. He has
served Cameron well and will be missed.”
During Carroll’s tenure as athletic director, the Aggie Golf team has brought home three Lone Star
Conference Championships in 1999, 2001 and 2004; the Lady Aggie volleyball team won the Lone Star
Conference Championship in 1998 and numerous Aggie teams have made NCAA postseason
appearances.
