CU agriculture department offering special
horticulture course during spring semester
If it has three pair of legs and likes green, leafy plants, Jim Coe can more than likely tell you something
about it.
Coe, longtime Comanche County director for the Oklahoma State University Extension Service and adjunct
horticulture instructor for Cameron University, will teach a new course, “Insect and Disease Pest of
Ornamental Plants,” during the Spring 2005 semester for CU’s agriculture department.
This introductory course will educate students on the diagnosis and treatment of insect and disease pests,
focusing heavily on plants grown outdoors and used in landscaping. The course meets each Monday from
5:30-7:20 p.m. with a lab on Wednesdays during the same time period.
The course focuses on classifying and identifying insects by order and family group, identifying diseases by
pathogen, recognizing insects and diseases damage, their mode of action and metabolism, and beneficial
insects and diseases. A pest management program will be discussed, including cultural, biological,
botanical and chemical controls.
The course is ideal for managers and technicians from professional lawn care services, professional spray
operators, golf course maintenance, college students and homeowners who maintain their own landscape.

“The course is suitable for students and landscapers at all levels,” Coe said. “The course will be extremely
beneficial to those just entering the field, but will also contain sufficient content that can be used by
experienced landscape managers. This would be an ideal course for homeowners.”
“Insect and Disease Pest of Ornamental Plants” is available for three hours of college credit or can be
audited for non-credit. Students should enroll through the CU agriculture department at 580/581-2275.
Classes for the Spring 2005 semester will be begin Monday, Jan. 10.
