Cameron University’s School of Liberal Arts
to offer programs, workshops at Simmons Center
Cameron University’s School of Liberal Arts will sponsor a variety of programs this academic year for
people living in the Duncan area.
The series begins Monday, Oct. 25 at the Simmons Center, when art and music majors team up for an
exhibition and a percussion performance. The student art exhibition begins at 7 p.m. in the lobby of the
Simmons Center and will be followed by the performance by the CU Percussion Ensemble at 8 p.m.
The student art exhibition will include approximately 120 two-dimensional works from courses in drawing,
painting, graphic design and printmaking. The works represent various assignments in the art curriculum
that demonstrate technical and conceptual development. Student art will include works in oil, watercolor,
charcoal and colored pencil, as well as monoprints, lithographs, solar prints, mixed media and computergenerated imagery and digital art.
“Our annual student exhibition is a universal academic event in the visual arts in which students begin their
exhibition experience,” said art department chair Edna McMillan, adding that Cameron students are excited
about the opportunity to show their work in Duncan.

The ensemble, under the direction of Dr. James Lambert, will perform original compositions for percussion
and marimba, including “Sabre Dance,” “Teamwork;” “La Llarona;” “Be Thou my Vision;” “Can You Feel the
Love Tonight,” and “Something for Riley.”
The concert will feature solos by CU graduate student Josh Sampson and music majors Yiu Ka Chan and
Jason Dozier. An informal reception and opportunity to meet the students will take place between the
exhibition and the performance.
Although the student art exhibition is free, admission to the percussion performance is $6 for adults and $4
for senior citizens, members of the military and students. CU students get in free with proper identification.
These are just the first of several events that Cameron will sponsor for the Duncan-Stephens County area
in the weeks ahead.
Dr. Earl Logan will conduct Cameron’s 51-member choir in a performance of works by Byrd, Rutter,
Hoepfner and Stroopes at 8 p.m. Nov. 22. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens, the military
and students. Cameron students will be admitted free with proper ID.
A two-day workshop for public school teachers and others who work with young people is set for Jan. 6-7.
“Non-Violent Crisis Intervention” is designed to help individuals recognize the onset of angry behavior and
intervene before it escalates. The cost of the workshop is $20.
Dr. Hyunsoon Whang will present a solo piano recital on Jan. 28. The program includes works of Ravel
and Mozart’s “Piano Sonata in A Minor,” which concludes with the famous “Rondo alla Turka.” Tickets are
$6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens, the military and students. CU students get in free with ID.
The CU/Simmons Center series wraps up next spring with a pair of writing workshops: “Grammar Matters,”
taught for business and education professionals by Dr. Vivian Thomlinson on March 10, and “Creative
Writing for Creative People,” led by Mark Spencer on April 7.
Thomlinson’s workshop is in response to recent comments and editorials about the need for better writing
among professionals. In his workshop, Spencer will describe the essential qualities that writers of fiction
and creative nonfiction should strive for. The registration cost for either workshop is $10 per person.
