CU students invited to study in Great Britain
Local college students have an opportunity to study the great works of Shakespeare where they were
originally written or learn forensic science techniques from the master detectives at Scotland Yard, through
a unique program offered through Cameron University.
The British Studies Program is organized by the University of Southern Mississippi through an academic
consortium of 10 universities and community colleges throughout the South. Cameron is an active member
of this consortium.
Students can learn more about the program by attending an upcoming informational meeting. Sessions are
set for 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 4 in the Student Activities Building on the Cameron
campus.
The five-week program offers participants a chance to select from a wide range of courses from 20 different
fields. These include anthropology, art, business, computer science, criminal justice, children's literature,
contemporary drama, Shakespeare, forensic science, geography history, interior design, journalism,
political science, sociology, speech communication, speech and hearing sciences and theatre arts.
"Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity for students to gain firsthand knowledge of other cultures,"
said CU President Cindy Ross. "This program gives students an experience not offered at many regional
universities. We are excited to offer this opportunity to students at Cameron.”

Students are housed in the Kings College Hall of Residence at the University of London, less than a fiveminute walk from the Houses of Parliament. This summer's program runs from July 1 to August 1.
Each class is overseen by an American professor who leads discussion and supervises students, though
class sessions are frequently taught by guest lecturers, by noted British scholars, artists and government
officials, who can provide the students with a truly British perspective on the subject under study.
"This program is unique in that students get both a high-quality classroom experience and the chance to
observe and explore the culture of England first-hand," said Dr. Von Underwood, an English professor who
is CU's British studies coordinator. "This study program is one of the largest in the U.S. and one of the
oldest. Students from our region who enroll in the program will join about 300 students from all over the
country in what is a very exciting learning community."
Students also earn six undergraduate or graduate credit hours which can be counted toward completion of
a degree at Cameron or any other accredited university.
Since only a limited number of students can be accepted, Underwood urged students to begin the
application process early. The program cost, which includes tuition, fees, housing and airfare, is
approximately $4,999 for undergraduate students and $5,299 for graduate students. Students who meet
requirements for federal Guaranteed Student Loans may apply for financial assistance.
Those interested in participating in the program can obtain an application from Underwood at his Cameron
office, Nance-Boyer 2014. More information is available by calling him at 580/581-2328 or by visiting
