For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, Feb. 5, 2004 CU broadcast students bring home OBEA honors Cameron University students won 13 awards in 11 categories during this year’s student broadcasting competition sponsored by the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association. It was the second largest number of awards presented to higher education institutions participating in the annual winter event. The OBEA, an association of broadcast educators and electronic media professionals, works to strengthen broadcast education in Oklahoma by encouraging interest from electronic media professionals and establishing a channel to exchange information and ideas between educators and professionals in the field. It is made up of Oklahoma’s largest public universities, regional universities, community colleges and private colleges and universities. Competition in the OBEA’s annual competition is open to students of member schools who submit their best broadcast work from the previous year in 25 possible categories. “Once again, this shows the quality of work by students in our broadcast program,” said Steve Adams, an assistant communication professor at Cameron. “We had several strong entries that didn’t win, which is indicative of the calibre of competition we faced.” First place award winners included Monte Brown of Tulsa for radio newscast and radio news story, Aaron Gilbee of Lawton for radio magazine program, Andrea Johnson of Lawton for radio public service announcement and Charles Stanley of Lawton for television photography. (over) broadcast, ADD ONE Brown also took second place for television feature news story, third for radio documentary and honorable mention for television news story. Other second place awards went to Gilbee, for radio PSA and to Peter Burke of Lawton for radio magazine program. Stanley received a third place award in television entertainment and teamed with Lindsay Baugh of Lawton for a third place award in script writing. Another third place award was presented to CU student Jonathan Colbert of Lawton in the radio commercial category. Adams indicated that Cameron’s student production of “This Week in Student Government,” which airs weekly on the campus cable network, CUTV, would also have been recognized had the category for television talk programs not been eliminated from this year’s competition. The Cameron students will receive their awards from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters during “student day” at its annual convention in April. The event allow students to interact with broadcasters from across the state and present their winning entries during a noon luncheon. – 30 – PR#04-029 Editors and Broadcasters: For more information contact CU Government & Community Relations at 580.581.2211.
