Program Goals:
English Education Goals:
1. Reach excellence in several areas: Liberal Studies courses in writing and literature, undergraduate major courses and graduate courses.
These teaching activities should be supported by appropriate scholarly research by relevant professional and creative activity and by
associated service both on and off campus.
2. Support undergraduate majors and graduate candidate in becoming proficient in the intellectual and technical skills needed for the study of
literature and for those careers that demand and appreciation of and sensitivity to language.
Common MAEd Goals:
1. Enable teachers to achieve advanced level licensure in North Carolina.
2. Provide a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing instructional expertise, knowledge of learners, research expertise, connecting subject
matter and learners, and professional development and leadership.
Student Learning Outcomes:
English Education Learning Outcomes:
1. M.A. in English-Articulate a sophisticated knowledge of literature professional writing ESL/TESOL, or rhetoric and composition, depending on
their concentration.
2. M.A. - TESOL, M.A., Ed- TESOL and M.A.T. – TESOL-Exhibit a mastery of the principles areas as sociolinguistics, foundations and
methodology, curriculum development and grammar.
3. M.A., Ed and M.A.T students in English-Demonstrate high-level knowledge of educational principles, practices and pedagogy, in addition to
knowledge of their subject area - whether English methods, language and literature or ESL/TESOL.
4. M.A. in English and M.A.- TESOL students who elect to write a thesis or put together a portfolio-Demonstrate expertise in in-depth library
research, the organization of a large document and a high level of writing.
5. M.A. students with concentration in Literature, Professional Writing or Rhetoric and Composition-Demonstrate basic competency in a modern
foreign language.

2. Plan, implement and evaluate instruction that is rigorous, coherent and consistent with a well-developed theoretical and philosophical stance
and with best practices emerging from educational research.
Knowledge of Learners:
1. Incorporate knowledge of the nature of the learner, learning processes, variations in learning abilities and learning styles, and strategies for
evaluating learning.
2. Plan, implement, and evaluate instruction that is responsive to wide variations in students’ learning needs and learning styles.
Research Expertise:
1. Understand and employ methods of research to examine and improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement.
Connecting Subject Matter and Learners:
1. Understand and link subject matter and students’ developmental and diverse needs in the context of school settings.
2. Plan, implement, and evaluate instruction that reflects intellectual rigor and depth of knowledge in both subject matter disciplines and students’
diverse learning needs.
Professional Development and Leadership:
1. Demonstrates self-directed, self-reflective professional behavior
