On Friday, November 7, 2008, at their annual conference, Mary Deck was awarded the Ruth C.
McSwain Distinguished Professional Service Award
for Outstanding Contributions to the School Counseling Profession by the North Carolina School Counselor Association (NCSCA). This is the highest award
given by NCSCA and reflects Mary’s years of dedication to the profession. The faculty had submitted
Mary’s name to receive NCSCA’s Counselor Educator
of the Year Award, and their Board instead voted to
give Mary an even higher honor. Congratulations,
Mary!

From the Editor
Thanks to Dana for her contribution to this month’s issue.
Since I am beginning internship in the spring, this will be my final issue as editor of Counseling Connections.
Starting next semester the newsletter will be in the competent hands of John Bryan Wilson. Email your future submissions to him at wanderbebo@hotmail.com.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Counseling Connections and to all those who have sent along
kind words or suggestions about the newsletter. I have enjoyed putting this together over the past two semesters and helping bring together the counseling program in a small way. ~Phil Waalkes

The NCSCA Conference
By Dana Timmons
From Wednesday, November 5 through Friday, November 7, 2008 the North Carolina School Counselor Association held its annual conference in Greensboro. The event offered sessions on various topics including how
to create a comprehensive school counseling program, an ethics workshop for high school counselors, and
concrete ideas for conducting a divorce group for elementary students. The topics were varied, interesting,
and useful. Phil Waalkes, Lisen Roberts, and I presented our research and activities regarding the transition
to college on Thursday during the final session. We had approximately 40 attendees at our hour-long presentation, which allowed us to spread information to a decent number of people. Following the session, we immediately received written feedback from our audience, a useful tool that will inform any future presentations we
make. We encourage all counseling students to present at a conference, as it is a great resume booster, practice in public speaking, and experience in professional development. You will leave with helpful resources
from other presentations as well as an invaluable sense of accomplishment.
