Connect learning outcomes in your course with this campus-wide celebration of the Community Creed and this year’s EYE on FYE contest theme. Submissions are welcome through March 31, 2012 Students are invited to creatively express themselves as they contemplate the WCU Community Creed Find out more about the Creed at the link above. If you want to discuss ideas about how to integrate this project into your spring course, please feel free to contact Glenda. For example… students and clubs and organizations can document service events, campus events, classroom projects, and more! They may work in-solo or with a class group, or with a student organization ---- so many possibilities! See the website for more details. Help your students Celebrate the Passage – April 27, 2012 Plan to join us as our first-year students Celebrate the Creed during the afternoon of the last day of class in April. EYE on FYE entries will be showcased during a campus-wide celebration of how students synthesize and creatively express their new understandings of classroom, campus and community. Finalists will be announced and prizes awarded. From here, students will progress to the annual Block Party, hosted by Residential Living, as students celebrate their Passage and plans to return in the fall joining the ranks of Extremes! Please consider including this EYE on FYE opportunity as a curricular connection if appropriate for your course goals – after all, the Creed is at the heart of the WCU learning experience as it aims to help our students develop a strong sense of civic and community responsibility – to become good citizens now and as they leave here to take on the world they will inherit. Toolbox The WCU Poverty Project: So many wonderful opportunities to engage…. Press on. Many ideas are sparking - many of which are posted on the WCU Poverty Project website. Please see the list of courses that will integrate these themes into course work this spring --- maybe we should add your class! The Core The Education Briefcase: Are you introducing the eBriefcase to your course? There is a ton of support ready to help you and your students. The eB implementation team is outstanding – and from the perspective of a ‘non-techie’ let me assure you – it is not so scary! For faculty and instructors – see more on their website. If you are teaching a course this semester here is something you can include in your syllabus: The Education Briefcase (eBriefcase) is an online portfolio system within Blackboard. The Technology Commons offers Walk-up Hours, Workshops, and Appointments with assistance on all aspects of computer use, including help with uploading materials to eBriefcase, creating artifacts, customizing your portfolio and sharing with instructors and others. Questions: contact Glenda Hensley at ghensley@wcu.edu Perspectives In the fall of each year our campus extends a tremendous amount of energy and effort to welcome our new first-year students (over 1500 this past fall) – and we do so with a bang! From tons of special events during Week of Welcome to lots of transition course options, special programing, and more – we let them know how much we value their choice to come to WCU. As we continue to extend special attention to our current firstyear students, I will set my intention to also be mindful of our spring entry students. On Monday we will welcome over 300 students to campus who are new to WCU – thus they are technically firstyear students – at least to us. Among this group 123 are classified as freshmen (including brand-new students and freshman-transfers). In addition we will be joined by 181 transfer students who have sophomore and above status. Please join me as we welcome all these students to the WCU community. I hope your spring semester is outstanding and your 2012 a year worthy of celebration!
