García-Castañón honored by South Carolina
literary association with poetry reading
On October 23, Santiago García-Castañón delighted poetry aficionados by giving
a reading for the literary association “The Write Place” in Greenville, South
Carolina. He has also been invited to give a reading of his poems (both in
Spanish and in English) at Gardner-Webb University. The upcoming event,
which will be open to the Gardner-Webb community, will be held at the Tucker
Library on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a book

WCUSPANISH
ALUMNI CORNER
WCUSPANISH wants to recognize achievements
of WCU alumni with a major or minor in Spanish.
RENÉ GÁMEZ (BA, Spanish and BS,
Accounting ’11, M. Ac. ’13) Immediately after
graduating from WCU in 2011, René began to work
at Dixon Hughes Goodman, a CPA (Certified Public
Accountant) firm in Asheville. While working for the
firm full time, he went to complete another degree at
WCU, this time a Master of Accountancy. He uses
his Spanish regularly to assist Spanish-speaking
clients with tax preparation, business consulting, and
various other areas associated with accounting.
Outside of work, René also uses Spanish to help
people in the community by translating documents
and interpreting in hospitals, banks, and schools.
(WCUSpanish would like to note that René was the
recipient of various merit-based scholarships that
acknowledged his excellent academic performance. See
this 2013 article in Western Carolina Magazine
celebrating the accomplishments of René and other
scholarship recipients.)
CHRISTINE (WEATHERS) RICHARDSON
(BSEd, Elementary Education with Spanish
minor ’12) Christine works as a second grade
teacher with an open classroom of 22 students at Ida
Rankin Elementary School in Gaston County. In
May of 2012, Christine married William
Richardson, who is currently attending UNCCharlotte for a degree in biology and math.
Christine and William live in Dallas, NC in a house
that she inherited from her great-aunt. As if working
with 22 second graders weren’t enough, she occupies
herself by leading a women’s Bible study group that
meets at Alexis Baptist Church.
She plans to
continue practicing and learning Spanish and hopes
to attend grad school in the future.
