All-Academy Theme Program This year's theme, "West Meets East: Enlightening, Balancing, and Transcending," will come fully alive on Sunday, August 14, when the All-Academy Theme (AAT) Program takes center stage. Jan Rivkin, the AAT Chair, and his committee have organized a fantastic program. The Program's 46 sessions, organized around a dozen tracks, will offer something exciting for everyone. Some sessions will focus on a surface interpretation of the theme—the implications of Asia's rise in global business—while others will examine a more subtle interpretation—the challenge of benefiting from diversity. The following small sample of AAT sessions will inspire you to look carefully at the entire program. Bridging East and West: Asian Business Schools and Models of Management Education and Research Join the Deans of leading business schools as they debate whether Asia's emerging schools should follow the Western model of scholarship or pursue a distinctive Eastern approach. The Caucus Program The Caucus program again received a record numbers of submissions for the 2011 AOM meeting; thanks to all of you who submitted proposals. As you may know, the caucus sessions are designed to provide a convenient, informal way for Academy members with shared interests to discuss common issues, and to explore potential research collaborations. Thanks to Cyndy Cycyota, this year's Caucus Program Chair, and her committee, the selected caucuses this year are centered around three primary themes: 1) regional scholar groups that use the forum to explore research ideas, 2) conference theme-related groups who this year are exploring additional ideas for "West meets East" ideas in international research, and 3) scholars with interests in sharing new methods for research. For example, a session entitled "People to People: An Invitation for scholars from East and West" explores ways that business educators can design and implement curricula that prepare new generations of leaders for a global society that pays more attention to human factors. Another caucus session that offers interesting discussion potential is "East Meets West: Ethics in Teaching and Publishing." This session will explore ethical similarities and differences between "East" and "West" in teaching, research, publishing and other professional roles. These are just two of the 48 caucuses offered on Monday and Tuesday of the meeting. Please explore the other interesting caucus ideas in the online program and plan to attend several that interest you. We look forward to your contributions to the discussion! Cross-Divisional Paper (CDP) Sessions Thanks to Bat Batjargal and his committee, this year's Cross-Divisional Paper (CDP) sessions are composed of 60 sessions on a wide variety of topics and themes that will have appeal to Academy members from many different divisions and interest groups. In total, we have 29 regular paper sessions and 31 roundtable sessions. These sessions range from more traditional themes such as institutional theory, social networks, multinational management, and careers to relatively under-researched issues such as global entrepreneurship, the role of religion and spirituality in business activities, and managerial transformation in the People's Republic of China. Scholars from fourteen different nations—from the United Kingdom and China to Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, on five continents—will serve as chair-facilitator of the CDP sessions. The session chairs include such well-established scholars as Martin Kilduff of the University of Cambridge, Neal Ashkanasy of the University of Queensland, and Shaker Zahra of the University Minnesota, as well as mid-career scholars and newly minted PhDs. All in all, the 2011 CDP sessions should offer exciting intellectual exchanges on a broad range of themes, thanks to a number of devoted chairs and interested presenters and participants. Discussion Paper Sessions (DISC) This year, the division program chairs have selected a range of intriguing and thought-provoking papers for the discussion sessions. Dorota Piaskowska and her committee have organized 87 sessions featuring between two and four papers, and spanning all the divisions and interest Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 groups within the Academy. They hope that everyone will be able to find something that interests them within the DISC program. The discussion sessions are a relatively recent addition to the program. They are led by some of the most respected researchers in each field and designed to offer plenty of opportunities for insightful and constructive discussions in a friendly setting. If you are looking for a forum where informal yet in-depth discussions led by experts are the key feature, please attend some of the DISC sessions. If you are interested in previewing the papers, you are welcome to do so through the online program or by contacting the authors. Here is a small sample of the DISC sessions. Please take a look at the online program, where you're sure to find many other exciting offerings. We hope to see you there! Charisma and Transformational Leadership. Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 Inspiring ENT Session Highlights This year‘s theme of the annual program of ―West Meets East‖ is most appropriate given the Academy‘s international growth and reach. With an evolving focus on increasing internationalization of entrepreneurship research and practices of developing countries and emerging economies, the Entrepreneurship Division has generated inspiring and interactive workshops that we hope audiences will find as opportunities for shared interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research. There are some sessions that need mentioning: Throughout much of the world, women have been deprived of the opportunity to participate fully in their national economies which keeps them from reaching their full potential. The female half of the population is the greatest unexploited economic resource and the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women‘s potential. Unleashing that process globally is not only the right thing to do; it‘s also the best strategy for fighting poverty. Countries such as China have prospered precisely because they emancipated women and brought them into the formal economy. Empowering Women Through Entrepreneurship will draw upon the expertise of scholars from 17 countries representing the West and East and explore the mechanisms that make entrepreneurship such a potent tool of empowerment by exploring the forms of empowerment and the key conditions under which it can occur. Social entrepreneurship has become a popular topic in leading business schools globally and firmly holds a place on policymakers‘ agendas but less is known about social enterprises in emerging economies such as China. Social Entrepreneurship in China: East Meets West will provide a deeper understanding of the issues by comparing and contrasting Western and Chinese contexts and practices, and encourage the sharing of best practice research from different perspectives and disciplines. Program session #219, Saturday, August 13, 2011, 8:30am – 11:00am, San Antonio Convention Center: Room 216 A. Drawing on the inspiration to encourage high-quality research Increasing the Quality of Women’s and Minority Entrepreneurship Research will provide mentoring to researchers trained outside of North America—particularly those from developing countries in Asia, Africa, South America, Eastern Europe or the Middle East—who are interested in this research domain. The focus will be to help participants strengthen their theoretical and empirical contributions. Participants will be required to make a written submission prior to the session. Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 Entrepreneurship (ENT) Division--PDW and Program Highlights This year again sees an extremely rich selection of thematic PDWs, Paper Sessions and Symposia on Theory, Method, and a range of topical areas of interest for those in the Entrepreneurship Division, or those just interested in entrepreneurship. Let me highlight just three of these that may be particularly appealing to colleagues across the Academy. First, The Entrepreneurship Division has put together various sessions in line with this year‘s main conference theme. Entrepreneurship plays a key role in society in both the Eastern and Western contexts. At the same time, both East and West have much to learn from each others‘ entrepreneurial experiences. Passion is a topic that has long eluded the analysis of entrepreneurship. This session focuses directly on the role that passion plays in entrepreneurial decision making and actions. The research spans methodological issues, theory development, and provides new empirical insights based on rigorous testing of unique data sets. Session 17315-Does Passion Have a Place in Entrepreneurship? Monday, August 15, 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM, San Antonio Convention Center, 007D. Second, among this year‘s sessions that highlight novel methodological approaches that will be attractive to colleagues in Entrepreneurship and many other divisions is Session 17318- Is Being New Really Such a Liability? Monday, August 15, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM, San Antonio Convention Center, 007C. This session provides compelling new research challenging this conventional wisdom concerning ―the liability of newness.‖ These new findings provide a fresh theoretical perspective by subjecting novel sources of new data to state-of-the-art empirical methodologies. Being new may not be such a liability after all. Third, social entrepreneurship has become a popular topic in leading business schools globally and firmly holds a place on policymakers‘ agendas but less is known about social enterprises in emerging economies such as China: Social Entrepreneurship in China: East meets West (PDW Program Session #219), Saturday, August 13, 2011, 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM, San Antonio Convention Center: Room 216 A). --David B. Audretsch, ENT Program Chair, 2011 Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 Organizational Communications and Information Systems (OCIS) Division Program Update Friday, August 12 will feature the OCIS Doctoral and Junior Faculty Consortia. A highlight of our Professional Development Workshop program on August 12-13 will be Saturday afternoon‘s community building workshop, "Building Bridges through a Socio-Technical Perspective," organized by Brian S. Butler (Pittsburgh), Steven L. Johnson (Temple) and Steve Sawyer (Syracuse). The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers who study a wide variety of research questions and phenomenon and who share interests around exploring social phenomenon together with related technology. The organizers will build from recent work done by the Consortium for the Science of Sociotechnical Systems (CSST: see http://sociotech.net) to facilitate participant networking and stimulate the discussion. Preregistration is required for this workshop. To register online, please visit https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. The cost to register is $25.00 and the deadline to register online is August 10, 2011. The OCIS Keynote Address, entitled ―Mortgaged Future: Did IT Have a Role in Creating the Crisis in Real Estate Finance?‖ will be presented by Dr. M. Lynne Markus on Monday, August 15, at 4:45. Information technology and the transparency it can bring are often cited as solutions to current and future global financial problems. But could IT have also have had a role in causing the mortgage meltdown? This presentation examines how the use of information technology—in the form of decision support (e.g., automated underwriting), transaction processing and electronic data exchange, and new information-based financial products (e.g., adjustable rate mortgages, collateralized mortgage obligations, etc.)—may have contributed to the crisis, and considers how enhancing technology may prevent future crises. Dr. Markus is the John W. Poduska, Sr. Professor of Information and Process Management at Bentley University. The OCIS Division Business Meeting and Social Hour will follow the Keynote on Monday evening. We encourage all Academy members who are interested in organizational communications and information systems issues to join us to learn about the division and meet OCIS members. The OCIS Executive Committee would like to acknowledge the generous support of the following sponsors of the 2011 program: Syracuse University School of Information Studies, University of Hawaii Shidler College of Business; University of Louisville College of Business; University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business; and, University of Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business Conflict Management Overall Program Highlights CONFLICT MANAGEMENT (CM) The Conflict Management Division offers a diverse and exciting program this year which includes a variety of professional development workshops aimed at members at all stages of their academic career to many original and intellectually stimulating scholarly sessions. From among this diverse array of offerings, we would like to highlight the following in particular: We are especially pleased to offer the Junior Faculty Research Incubator and would like to welcome junior faculty from across the Academy with an interest in cross-cultural negotiation and conflict to join us for this interesting and innovative session. Junior Faculty Research Incubator: West Meets East in the Negotiation of Conflicts and Deal-making Jr. Faculty Research IncubatorSaturday, Aug 13 2011 9:00AM - 5:30PM at Grand Hyatt in Lone Star B Organizer: William P. Thomas-Hunt; U. of Virginia; Every other year the Conflict Management Division sponsors a workshop that brings together junior faculty with senior scholars to generate research projects around topics of common interest. In Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 keeping with the Academy theme, this year the research incubator will focus on the process and outcomes of negotiation as it takes place in the West and the East. Research that enlightens about differences in practice, should provide insight into how those differences can be transcended. Another session not to be missed is the CM showcase symposium: Hierarchy and Moral Behavior in Organizations Hierarchy and Moral Behavior Monday, Aug 15 2011 11:30AM - 1:00PM at Grand Hyatt in Bonham C Organizer: Jessica Kennedy; U. of California, Berkeley; Discussant: Jerald Greenberg; RAND Corporation; This symposium aims to further understanding of how hierarchies in organizations, which involve power, status, and the exertion of control over others through formal and informal rules, affect different types of moral behavior. It combines work from psychology and behavioral ethics paradigms to initiate more discussion between researchers examining related research questions. Driving to the Top: How Status Influences Punishment of Transgressions Presenter: Lamar Pierce; Washington U. in St. Louis; Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt: Power, Moral Clarity, and Punishment in the Workplace Presenter: Scott Wiltermuth; U. of Southern California; Presenter: Frank Flynn; Stanford U.; Gratitude Expression Assuages the Wrath of Incompetent Power Holders Presenter: Yeri Cho; U. of Southern California; Presenter: Nathanael J. Newman Award Nominee: Forgiveness & Reconciliatation: What Will Help You to Forgive Me? Monday, Aug 15 2011 3:00PM - 4:30PM at Grand Hyatt in Bonham C Chair: Sheli Sillito; Brigham Young U. The Forgiving Organization: Building and Benefiting From a Culture of Forgiveness Author: Ryan Fehr; U. of Washington, Seattle; Winner of CM Division Best Paper Award - New Directions Forgiveness is a powerful social force with lasting consequences for victims and offenders. Nonetheless, theory on forgiveness as an organizational phenomenon has lagged. In response to this concern, we introduce the construct of forgiveness culture as an organizational affordance and constraint. Forgiveness culture emergence is traced to three key values – relationality, temperance, and dignity – that are cultivated through leaders and organizational structures. Helping, building, and creating are in turn examined as its primary behavioral consequences. The Effects of Observed Forgiveness and Discipline on Teammate Forgiveness and Team Perceptions Author: Lukas B. Neville; Queen's School of Business, Canada; Author: Susan E. Brodt; Queen's U. In the wake of a workplace trust violation, victims may choose to forgive a transgressor rather than nurse a grudge. Little research has considered how the victim‘s choice to forgive influences the perceptions and interpersonal motives of teammates who witness a trust breach and its aftermath. In an experimental vignette study, we test how forgiveness interacts with the type of discipline faced by the transgressor (forbearing, retributive or restorative) to shape teammates‘ own forgiveness of the transgressor, their intention to punish the transgressor, their identification with the team, and their perceptions of the team‘s justice and cohesion. The Blame-taker's Dilemma: Actions and Reactions in the Wake of Organizational Failure Author: Brian C. Gunia; Northwestern U.; Winner of CM Division Best Student Paper Award & William H. Newman Award Nominee In the wake of negative organizational events, research directs the involved actors to apologize. However, ―apologies‖ often Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 communicate two, distinct messages: responsibility (they take blame) and regret (they express remorse). Though theoretically and practically distinguishable, taking blame and expressing remorse, independently, have not received much research attention. This leaves an important gap, as organizational actors often do one without the other. My research focuses on blametaking, examining its independent incidence and effectiveness after a common event: a failure with multiple causes. Study 1 investigated incidence, asking consultants to reflect on a failure that they had personally experienced. Their responses suggested that blame-taking is rare and confined to leaders and minor failures. Study 2 sampled separate consultants from the same firm; they reacted to someone who took blame or expressed remorse for the Study 1 stories. Notwithstanding its scarcity, blame-taking was roundly rewarded by the Study 2 participants, in comparison to remorse. With a sample of working adults, Study 3 replicated these effects and documented a reason: blame-taking establishes an actor‘s character more than remorse. Overall, this research highlights a potential disconnect between what organizational actors do and what others want them to do. People appear quite reluctant to take blame, even though their counterparts would almost uniformly welcome it. Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 Health Care Management Division (HCM) 2011 PDW Preview The Health Care Management Division‘s 2011 program promises to be bigger (it‘s in Texas, where everything is bigger) and better (your participation will make it so) than ever before. The first day‘s PDW, Friday, August 12, 2011, will kick-off the Academy conference with a field trip to Brooke Army Medical Center located on historic Fort Sam Houston. (Program Entry: Brooke Army Medical Center and Center for the Intrepid Field Trip Program Session #: 40) | Submission: 12067 | Scheduled: Friday, Aug 12 8:30AM - 12:30PM. Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 HR Division Highlights The HR Division again has innovative and exciting sessions planned for the upcoming Conference in San Antonio. Please check out these outstanding examples across Professional Development Workshops, All-Academy Sessions, and Scholarly Programs. Taking Stock and Looking Forward: The HR-Performance Research Agenda over the Next Twenty Years Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 13 2011 2:15PM - 5:15PM, Grand Hyatt in Crockett A & B Scholars of human resource management, industrial relations, and strategic management have for many years shared a common goal of understanding how the management of human capital affects the operational and financial performance of organizations. One stream of this research has specifically focused on how bundles of HR practices, often referred to as high performance work systems (HPWS), high involvement work systems, and high commitment work systems, relate to organizational performance via their effects on human capital. On average, this research has found a small but positive relationship between sets of certain practices in the HR system and business unit and firm-level outcomes (Combs, Liu, Hall, & Ketchen, 2006). However, this work has been characterized by a number of persistent theoretical and methodological challenges that need to be better addressed to facilitate continued progress. For purposes of focusing the PDW, we organize the main part of the program around three selected challenges: 1. Heavy reliance on the resource-based view of the firm to the exclusion of other theoretical frameworks. 2. Theoretical/methodological issues related to how human capital mediates the HR systembusiness performance relationship; and 3. Theoretical/methodological issues of endogeneity and causality. We invite distinguished scholars from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to participate in an interactive dialogue regarding these challenges, discussing potential solutions or even ―ideal studies‖ that could enhance this research. We also provide an opportunity for panelists and participants to identify other research problems and opportunities as fuel for current discussion and for possible inclusion in a future PDW.Pre-registration is required for this workshop. To register online, please visit https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. The deadline to register online is August 10, 2011. Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 AOM Ambassadors: East meets West in the Academy through Collaborative Research Scheduled: Sunday, Aug 14 2011 4:30PM - 6:00PM, San Antonio Convention Center 202B The Academy of Management membership profile is at a significant point in the history of the organization, where more new members are from outside of the US than within it. In the near future, the majority of the total membership of AOM will be from outside of the US. In this context it is very important for us to identify sustainable mechanisms for integrating and engaging our global membership, and to develop and disseminate knowledge that is relevant to management scholars operating outside of the U.S. context. This symposium session is geared toward leaders and active members from all Academy Divisions. The goal is to describe the development and results of an approach that has been successful in addressing the need for a more integrated global membership in which West really does meet East: The HR Division's Ambassadors Program Research Meets Practice: Networking Among HR Professionals Scheduled: Monday, August 15, 5:30 – 8:30pm, Grand Hyatt, Lone Star F HR Researchers: Are you interested in connecting with practicing professionals to better understand how they apply your research and find potential participants for future studies? HR Practitioners: Are you looking for research-based guidance for your work in human resources from some of the leading researchers in the field? This exciting and innovative session will feature participants and several speakers from the local chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), and American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Researchers will share the latest in evidence-based guidelines and suggest ways to apply this evidence in practice; practicing professionals will describe how they apply evidence in their work and discuss opportunities for future collaboration. This networking event follows the popular Cracker Barrel format, in which each table features a different speaker and participants can sample as many as three presentations on areas of interest. This format encourages interaction between speakers and participants— and creates a comfortable environment for networking. For authoring guidelines, please visit businessexpertpress.com Business Expert Press‘s focus is on producing concise, academically sound, applied books aimed at providing supplemental reading for undergraduate and MBA business education as well as for the business executive education marketplace, an underserved market segment. These short books (150 pages on average) will be used in executive education, and as supplementary material in undergraduate and MBA programs. They might also be useful for the professional market. The books will be supplemented, as necessary, with cases, articles, newsletters and podcasts, and to this end BEP distributes its books through University Readers, Study.net and Xanedu – the leading providers of course packs. There are several reasons why you might want to consider contributing to one of our management collections, such as strategic management or entrepreneurship. You could use such a book in your teaching, both in traditional settings and executive settings. The book could enhance your consulting practice. It would give you an easy ―underlined item‖ on your vita. Business Expert Press will sell your book both in print and in digital collections to the business school libraries of the world. The library market is large – 7000 libraries globally – and the prices paid for these one-time sales are relatively high when compared to one-time, direct-toconsumer sales. Thus they yield good royalty potential. As you might know from your own executive teaching and/or consulting experiences or those of your colleagues, the material available for this market segment is sparse. Most educators rely on extracts from textbooks, articles, readings, cases, etc. all, often, precariously tied together in custom packets. It has been Business Expert Press‘s experience that the best executive education/MBA teachers often distribute some of their own work in these custom packets. You might already have your own ―technical notes‖ that you ask your students to read or your own PowerPoint presentations that you use to teach specific topics. These materials can serve as the starting point of a short book. Our collection editors will guide you through topic selection, assist you in achieving the appropriate tone in your writing, and then support you through the production process. Professional editors will also help you polish the manuscript. Business Expert Press employs a quick, 120-day production timeline. All editors and operations are based in the United States. Business Expert Press is headed by David Parker, formerly editor-in-chief for business publishing with Pearson Education. David published more than 10 successful first editions with Pearson and in three years as the head of BEP has already signed more than 165 books and published more than 70 books with leading authors in many fields of business. The aim of this award is to acknowledge the work of scholars who have forged, rather than severed, connections between careers and other fields of social inquiry. The award carries, with the permission of his family, the name of Everett Cherrington Hughes. It does so to commemorate his seminal role in establishing careers as an object of scholarly study, but more particularly because it rewards the kind of contribution his work embodied. Past recipients of the award are: Ed Schein, Tim Hall, Lotte Bailyn, Mike Arthur, Jeff Greenhaus, Barbara Lawrence, and Kathy Kram. Nomination materials should be emailed to committee chair Maury Peiperl at Maury.Peiperl@imd.ch The following information is required for a nomination to be considered and must be emailed as one unit by the May 13th deadline: (1) letter of support from primary nominator, (2) a copy of the nominee‘s vita, (3) at least one additional letter of support. Letters of support should clearly detail how the nominee meets the requirements of this honor. Also, in addition to organizing the nomination, the primary nominator is responsible for communicating with the nominee and with those who write letters of support. Please remember that the award committee does not use a rolling nomination procedure. Thank you in advance for your participation in this important process. Please email Maury Peiperl with any questions. Academy of Management News June 2011 Volume 42, Issue 2 Introducing the Diversity & Inclusion Theme Committee Last fall, AOM President Susan Jackson formed a committee to help ensure that the Academy fully supports and leverages the scholarly contributions of its diverse members. The newly formed Diversity & Inclusion Theme Committee (D&ITC) includes Quinetta Roberson (Committee Chair), Yvonne Benschop, Bernardo Ferdman, Patrick McKay, Isabel Metz, Ed Ng, Stella Nkomo, and Lynn Shore (PDW Chair). The mission of the D&ITC is to provide learning and outreach opportunities across the Academy of Management that foster a more diverse and inclusive community in which all members are involved in, and contribute to, the growth and success of the organization. Our mission is guided by these values and principles: • Diversity is all of the multiple lines of difference that characterize our current and future membership. • Inclusion means that all members have the opportunity to be represented, to have their voices heard and valued, and to influence on AOM. • Inclusion requires identifying and removing barriers to all members‘ full participation in the activities and decision-making of AOM. • The growth and success of AOM are dependent upon having a globally diverse perspective and broadening the scope and impact of our field. • AOM will be strengthened and improved to the degree that we incorporate the knowledge and perspectives of its diverse memberships and constituents. Over the next 3 years, the committee will be working to: 1 Increase the awareness, importance, and impact of diversity and inclusion in AOM in a sustainable manner. 2. Identify and remove systemic, structural, and social barriers to diversity and inclusion in AOM. 3. Promote diversity and inclusion in AOM by increasing the representation, involvement and access of underrepresented groups at all levels. 4. Act as a resource to the AOM community by disseminating guidelines and tools on diversity and inclusion. 5. Support the career development of underrepresented groups in AOM by offering professional development, networking opportunities, and access to mentoring. 6. Provide opportunities for dialogue, mutual learning, and cooperation among AOM members worldwide with different backgrounds. 7. Have an impact beyond the annual AOM meeting by undertaking outreach activities to increase diversity and inclusion worldwide. AFAM has been set up with the purpose of developing and improving member‘s capabilities for research and teaching management in organisations in Africa as well as to promote research and education about management and organisations in Africa. This conference shall bring together scholars in Africa and those outside of Africa to present and discuss the particular nature of managing in Africa, philosophies under-pinning management and organisational theory in Africa and the challenges of doing research in Africa with a view of creating a new interest and commitment to advancing and supporting management education and research in Africa. This will provide AFAM and AOM a significant platform to build on, an opportunity to connect with and learn more about management and organisations in Africa. The inaugural miniconference will bring together for the first time pioneers of research on management and organisations in Africa with junior management scholars from the African continent and those AOM members who engage in or who have an interest in research on management and organisations in Africa. AFAM therefore invites you to come and learn more about management in Africa and also explore the opportunity to collaborate with scholars who do research on Africa as well as forge links with business schools and universities in Africa. More than ever, it is critical for managers to proactively shift away from devaluing employees as marginal capital to empowering them as human capital. "Perceived organizational support" — employees' perception of how much an organization values their contribution and cares about their well-being — mutually benefits both employees and their organizations and is integral to sustainable employer–employee relationships. Using organizational support theory and evidence gathered from hundreds of studies, Eisenberger and Stinglhamber demonstrate how perceived organizational support affects employees' well-being, the positivity of their orientation toward the organization and work, and behavioral outcomes favorable to the organization. The authors illustrate these findings with employee experiences and strategic approaches of major organizations such as Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, Costco, and Google. Organizational psychologists, management consultants, managers, and graduate students will obtain a clear understanding of perceived organizational support and the practical knowledge needed to foster its development and positive outcomes.
