In the March newsletter, I challenge our members to “Dare to Care” by participating in this compassion project, regardless of whether or not you will be attending the meeting in Montreal. My challenge is a goal of 10,000 gifts/donations in a combination of books and clothing (only 1 piece per person), and another goal of 10,000 in dollars (only $1 per meeting participant)! Let us leave a memorable legacy in Montreal by meeting our goal of 10,000. Please visit the Compassion Montreal webpage for many simple and easy ways you can show your compassion to and leave a footprint in Montreal. A Special Theme-related Magazine In collaboration with L’Itineraire Group, a local charitable organization that promotes passion and compassion towards the less fortunate, an AOM issue of L’Itinéraire Geotourism Magazine will be published, in addition to the usual meeting program, to celebrate this year’s meeting theme. The full color magazine will feature a variety of AOM theme-related activities and sessions. It also will have information about the Montreal city with articles about its geoconscious businesses and many extraordinary city attractions. The PDF version of this magazine will be available on the AOM meeting website in early July. A hard copy of this magazine will be available at the meeting registration desk. I am so excited about all of the wonderful activities and sessions that are on the program and grateful to all those who have contributed to this wonderful program, including the authors, the reviewers, and the PDW and program chairs. I can’t wait to be in Montreal and I hope you are too. See you in Montreal! Anne S. Management History (MH) Division Program Update The key word for this year's Management History Division Program is—timely! Our sessionsboth pre-conference and scholarly paper- provide a valuable perspective on what management history can tell us about several current societal issues as well as topics of interest to all types of management scholars. The PDW lineup includes well-regarded standards and some fantastic new additions. Two PDWs (an introduction to the AOM and MH division; a workshop on the use of ethnographic research methods) kick off the program on Friday, August 6. On Saturday, we have several co-sponsored and sole-sponsored PDWs occupying a range of topic areas from managing the dissertation process to a conversation with 20 journal editors, how to get published, and even an interview with Tim Mescon (12:30PM - 2:30PM, Le Palais Des Congres, 510C) designed to trace the history of the Entrepreneurship Division. Turning to the paper sessions, there are several offerings that show how business history can 5 Academy of Management News June 2010 Volume 41, Issue 2 shed light on contemporary issues facing managers. For example, health care has dominated both the political and business news throughout the year. Ever wonder about how we got to the current state of affairs in health care management? We offer a session "Perspectives on Health Care: Histories of Health Management and Implications for the Present" (Monday, 9:4511:15AM, The Queen Elizabeth, Gatineau) that considers the history of how health care has evolved and what this history can tell us about the future of health care management. Another program highlight not to be missed is the symposium “A Conversation with Ed Schein: The Leader as Helper” (Monday,1:15 - 2:45PM, The Queen Elizabeth, Hochelaga 1). This session will be held a bigger room this year given the overflow crowds in Chicago for this event! We also offer a session on public sector reform and the history of immigration (yet another hot topic this year), along a session built around leadership history “Historical Perspectives on Leaders, Executives, and Coaching “(Monday, 8:00 - 9:30AM, The Queen Elizabeth, Gatineau), business histories across the globe, and a unique session “Influencing Great Minds: Ideas and Events that Shaped the Thoughts of Management Thinkers “(Monday, 3:00-4:30 PM, The Queen Elizabeth, St-Laurent) that considers how the 'great minds' of management were influenced early in their careers. On Tuesday, we offer an examination of how women have influenced management thought in “What Have the Women Done?: Women and Their Contributions to Management Theory (and Management)” (Tuesday, 8:00-9:30 AM, The Queen Elizabeth, St-Laurent) and we are proud to co-sponsor the showcase symposium “The other North American voice: exploring Canadian corporate social responsibility” (Tuesday, 11:30 - 1:00PM, The Queen Elizabeth, Mackenzie) that takes an interesting angle on this year’s conference theme while focusing on the host country. Finally, be sure to join us at our business meeting Monday at 5:30 (The Queen Elizabeth, Gatineau) to be followed by the social Monday evening. In addition to other interesting sessions, this year's program truly offers something for management scholars of all inclinations. See you there! Entrepreneurship (ENT) Division – PDW and Program Highlights This year again sees an extremely rich selection of thematic PDWs, Paper Sessions and Symposia on Theory, Method, and a range of topical areas of interest for those in the Entrepreneurship Division, or those just interested in entrepreneurship. Let me highlight just three of these that may be particularly appealing to colleagues across the Academy. First, the Entrepreneurship Division has put together various sessions in line with this year’s main conference theme. Obsession and passion contribute productively towards entrepreneurship through their combined impact on sustained entrepreneurial action, as explored in highly interesting papers which include contributions from colleagues across three continents (Session #843, Monday, Aug 9 2010, 11:30AM - 1:00PM, Le Palais Des Congres, 514B). 6 Academ my of Managem ment News Junee 2010 Volume 41, Issue I 2 Second, among this year’s y sessioons that highhlight novel methodologi m ical approacches that willl be attractivee to colleagu ues in Entreppreneurship and a many otther divisionns is a sympoosium on braainbased ressearch. (Prog gram sessionn #1628, Tueesday, Aug 10 1 2010, 1:115PM - 2:45P PM, Le Palaais Des Conggres, 510D). This approach providess a new arsenal of tools that allows the t reexaminattion of long--held but posssibly incom mplete theoriees, and to deevelop more robust theorries that can model m the co omplexity off human behhavior withinn an organizaation. Third, seeveral imporrtant theoretiical developments have recently beeen made in Entrepreneur E rship. They are: Bricolage, Discovery and a Creationn, Effectuatioon, and Entreepreneurial Orientation. O One of the higghlights of th his year’s PD DW program m is devoted to discussioon of these diifferent theoretical areas (PD DW Session #182; # Saturdday, August 7, 2010, 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Le Palais Des Congres in 515 B).
