Abstract
Theabilitytounderstandspeechinthepresenceofafluctuatingbackground
noiseisoneofthemarvelsofthehumanauditorysystem.Justhowdowe
assemblethecomponentsofspeechthatonlybrieflypopupoutofanocean
ofbackgroundnoise?Onetheoryisthatwelisteninthe"dips"ofthe
backgroundnoisewherethetargetsignalisbrieflymoreaudible.Aswith
mosttheories,theneedforrefinementisoftensuggestedbyexperiment.
Recentexperimentssuggestthatourunderstandingof,andourpursuitof
"restoring"dip-listeninginthehearingimpairedhasledusupsomeblind
alleys.Thistalkwillreviewsomeoftheserecentexperiments.
