Overview
- The TCEQ Remediation Division issued an updated guidance for the soil sample
collection method SW-846 5035A that will go into effect January 1, 2016.
- All soil samples collected for Volatiles analysis by SW-846 8260 GC/MS collected
for the compliance with any of the following 30 TAC Chapters:
• Chapter 334, subchapters D and F (Underground and Aboveground
Storage Tanks)
• Chapter 335 Subchapter S (Risk Reduction Standards) and
• Chapter 350 (Texas Risk Reduction Program TRRP)
- Due to the high potential for calcium carbonate in Texas soil, TCEQ recommends
the samples to be collected using no preservative (i.e. DI Water) and to be stored
in the freezer upon receipt at the laboratory.
Key Tips
- Holding time: 48 Hours holding time to freeze at the laboratory
- Standard 14 day holding time after samples are frozen
- Sample should weigh ± 0.5 grams
- Make sure to tighten all caps!
- DO NOT label pre-weighed vials
- Collected moisture in the separate container provided

Sampling Kit
1. 2 x 40mL vials with 5mL DI water and a stir bar
2. 1 x 40mL vial with 5mL methanol (Blue cap)
3. 1 Terracore 5 g sampling device
4. One moisture container
Sampling Instructions
1. Uncap each vial – one at a time to ensure you recap the correct vial.
2. With the Terra Core sampler, collect 5 grams of soil (see Step 1).
a. Push the sampler into the soil with the center section (the plunger) flush with the top of the sampler.
b. Pull the sampler out of the soil

c. Turn the plunger at a 90 degree angle
d. Slowly and at a slight angle to avoid splashing: Extrude the soil
from the sampler into the vial by pushing the plunger down (see Step 2).
3. Place the cap on the vial making sure that there is a good seal Replace
the vial into the foam container
4. Note the identification number on the vial. This ID number must be
written on the chain of custody.
Soil
5. Record the vial identification number for the vial(s) and the
sampling information (location, sampling time, and specific analyses)
for each sample on the chain of custody. Please fill out the chain of
custody completely.
