District Planning Committee January 28th, 2011 District Office [Board Room] Present: Adrianna Barrera (District), David Beaulieu (District), Phyllis Braxton (Pierce), Lourdes Brent (Trade-Tech), Karen Daar (East), Michelle Fowles (Valley), Alfred Gallegos (City), Ran Gust (East), Deborah Kaye (District), Sarah Master (East), Maury Pearl (District), Tom Rosdahl (Pierce), Jim Stanberry (Harbor), Hanh Tran (Mission), Dan Walden (Southwest) 1. Minutes of Dec. 17, 2010 and Nov. 19, 2010 meeting minutes were approved. 2. Xitracs Demonstration: Deborah Kaye arranged for the committee to view a demonstration of Xitracs, a web-based system for accreditation management. The system includes features such as document sharing, collaboration, and hosting of accreditation evidence. The consensus of the committee was that, while useful, the software was not cost justified at this time. It was recommended that the District explore collaboration and document sharing tools that it has including Microsoft SharePoint (currently deployed at both City and East) and follow-up with District IT concerning its plans to use this platform. 3. Update on Student Success: Yasmin Delahoussaye provided the committee with a handout summarizing the most recent California Community Colleges Student Success Meeting she attended. The topics included updates on the statewide community college budget, workforce needs in relation to degree attainment, and student characteristics. While the LACCD budget for community colleges could be reduced by $76M, student completion continued to be a major focus of policy. The committee is examining policy issues such as common assessment and placement and a core curriculum to promote student success. 4. District Strategic Plan: Yasmin Delahoussaye presented a process and timeline for revision of the District Strategic Plan (DSP) in a handout titled Suggested Directions for the District Strategic Plan. She described the activities involved and their timeframe, which would begin in January 2011 and end in May 2012. There was discussion concerning the process used to develop the current DSP including the initial participants, stakeholder involvement, and process used to develop goals and objectives. David Beaulieu argued for the need to bring the process of updating the plan to consultation and suggested that there be broad representation in this effort in addition to the involvement of the DPC. Yasmin envisioned that the update could be accomplished by having DPC divide into work groups focusing on topic or goal areas. 5. College Presentations to Board Committee on Planning and Student Success: Yasmin Delahoussaye and Maury Pearl discussed the format for college presentations to the Committee on Planning and Student Success. Presentations are scheduled for March, April and May and will follow the last year’s format, focusing on college effectiveness measures, alignment of college and District strategic goals, and college accomplishments and challenges. There was also discussion about the presentations including alternative formats, time allotments, and opportunities for colleges to engage in dialogue with the Board. Next Meeting: Friday, February 25, 2011, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. District Office, Board Hearing Room
