DEFINITION
CLASS SPECIFICATION
CLASS CODE 5064
Performs a variety of specialized clerical duties such as obtaining relevant student background data, imparting program information, and providing basic information to students and other community members regarding program selection and referral services for community services programs.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Explains and interprets procedures and eligibility requirements for community programs and services to students and other community members.
Obtains information from students and program participants on matters related to their personal, educational, vocational, and financial background.
Contacts campus, community, and governmental representatives and organizations to obtain information regarding available resources, to inform agencies of services offered, to encourage participation in campus programs, and to obtain periodic information regarding the progress of individuals participating in a program.
Reviews and processes various forms, records, and application by checking them for completeness, accuracy.
Refers individuals to various campus departments and community organizations for further information and assistance regarding specialized programs and services.
Utilizes standard office software applications to compile data and prepare routine reports and correspondence concerning community support services.
Assists in scheduling classes for community services programs.
Maintains the security of files and records containing confidential data on program participants.
May assist in writing and proofreading copies of bulletins, brochures, and news releases to publicize various services.
May maintain an inventory of office supplies and order, receive, stock and distribute supplies.
May maintain and reconcile office expenditure accounts.
May provide training and work direction to unclassified staff.
Performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Community Services Aide applies a working knowledge of the requirements and procedures of a community service program in the performance of a variety of specialized clerical duties such as obtaining and imparting information and providing basic guidance and referral services.
A Community Services Assistant performs duties related to the development, promotion, coordination, and evaluation of a community program or service. A thorough knowledge of program policies, goals, and procedures is continuously applied in performing the duties of the class.
A Community Services Specialist possesses technical and professional expertise in one or more of the subjects which constitute a community services based project and is responsible for the formulation, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of a major community services project or of a diversified community services program of limited scope and size.

SUPERVISION
Immediate supervision is received from a classified or academic supervisor. Work direction may be provided to student employees and other unclassified personnel.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles of Business English, punctuation, spelling, and grammatical usage
Basic policies and procedures of community service programs
Letter, memorandum, and report formats
Basic public relations techniques for public contract in person and on the telephone
Principles of recordkeeping
Capabilities of computer systems, software and hardware common to a community services program
Ability to:
Impart and secure information pertaining to programs tactfully and accurately
Assists students in filling out appropriate forms
Work effectively and tactfully with administrators, employees, community members, and organizations
Work effectively and tactfully with individuals from various educational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds
Effectivly utilize computer equipment in the performance of duties
Give clear and concise instructions
Use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar
Prepare routine correspondence and reports
Keep accurate files and records
Learn, understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, and procedures pertaining to a program
Learn specialized computer applications
ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
Experience:
None is required. One year of full-time paid general clerical experience which included use of computer equipment and public contact is desirable.
Special:
A valid Class “C” California driver’s license may be required for some positions.
Travel throughout the District may be required.
