Degree requirement or course description change as it would appear in the catalogue (Course description change: 50 words or less; include
prefix, number, title, credit hours, crosslisting, pre/corequisites,
etc.).
Requirements for a Major in Biology forthe B.A. Degree: 59 hours. BIO 201 and 202, which must be taken
early in the program of study; BIO 335 and BIOL 335; BIO 325 and BIOL 325, or BIO 340,or BIO 345 and
BIOL 345, or BIO 240 and 241; BIO 366 and BIOL 366; and BIO 495 or BIOL 495. A minimum of 30 hours
chosen from BIO courses numbered above 299, at least two of which must be laboratory courses, and CHM 101102. No more than 10 hours from BIO 480, 491, 493,498, and 499 can be counted towards the 30 elective hours.
BIO 335 and BIO 366 must be completed before taking other BIO courses at the 300 or 400 level. A "C" (2.00)
or better average is required for BIO courses above 299.
Justification for request or degree change:
We are strengthening our BA program to bring it more in line with the BS Bio and BS Marine Bio degrees by
requiring that students complete a core of 5 courses (201, 202, 335, 366, and a physiology course), prior to
moving into >300 level courses. We have added 8 hours to the program, moving the total hours required from 51
to 59 hours, by requiring two more BIO electives. In addition, at least two of the elective courses must by
laboratory courses. No changes have been made to the collateral courses and the students may still choose from a
large slate of BIO electives.
