Multicultural Competence: The awareness, knowledge, and skills necessary to work effectively and ethically across cultural differences. The Diversity Committee is proposing a professional development opportunity for division members to self assess current levels and strive for increased multicultural competence. The aim is to take the diversity committee events from a simple menu of events to creating an intentional professional development experience. Below, you will see the three areas of multicultural competency as well as examples of both past and on-going programs that enhance these developmental areas. Multicultural Knowledge: Having an informed understanding of cultures that are different from one’s own culture, including knowledge of their histories, traditions, values, practices and so forth. Multicultural Awareness: Awareness of how people’s attitudes, beliefs, values, assumptions, and selfawareness affect the ways they interact with those who are culturally different from themselves.
