Subject: New Proposed Minor
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to you in reference to a new minor that the Department of Public and International Affairs
is proposing in Security Studies. The core courses for the program are security related political science
courses. However, the concentration courses draw from a number of departments, including yours, for
the balance of program.
I am writing to you in order to let you know what we are submitting (see below). The lists of courses in
the concentrations are likely not comprehensive. If you wish to offer amendments to this program,
please let me know.
Thank you.
Best Regards,
Dan Masters

Hi Paul,
Sorry the turnaround took so long on this. The courses you mention below are in the proposal already. I
did add HST 317 to the European area as well as the area on insurgency and political violence. I am
enclosing the up-to-date version for you. We are at a point where we need to know if History assents to
this program for the proposal. I appreciate all the feedback the course offering are much richer.

104 would not be a bad choice
I am not sure what is already in the program, but there are a lot of upper level courses that could fit.
Did Taylor mention
HST 380 - The Cold War: An International History, or is it already in?
Besides Lisa’s more current Middle East courses, you might want to consider Sue’s
• HST 326 - Russia Since 1881
Venkat Dhulipala’s
HST 365 - India and Pakistan after 1947
Nana Amponsah’s
HST 372 - History of Modern Africa
Eva Mehl’s
HST 368 - History of Modern Latin America
Or even my
HST 317 - Northern Ireland from 1880

Paul,
I am in communication with Taylor Fain about additions and amendments to the Security Studies minor.
We are including HST 301, likely as an optional course in the core, and HST 380 in the European and
Russian Regional Concentration. He has a possible list on some of Gao Bei’s courses as well that may fit
the “Rise of China” concentration. I wanted to come back to you about the other history course you
recommended. I have misplaced your previous email. I am not quite sure, but I believe the course HST
104. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Best,
Dan

I previously contacted you regarding the proposed security studies minor. We are now at a point where
we need to know if you, and your departments, want to offer assent for this program proposal. I am
enclosing the proposal again for you to review. If you can, get back to me by Friday, August 20.

5. Criminal Justice
Dan,
Thanks for the inclusion in the Security Studies Minor. Currently Drs. LaGrange and Maume teach CRM
410, while Dr. Snowden teaches CRM 420. Both have tried to recruit me to teach the course and I may
do so. CRM 410 usually will have open slots and we’ll look forward to Security Studies filling them. In
the event the Minor draws huge numbers of students, I think it was wise to have many courses listed in
both area studies and the revolution and political violence areas.
Regards,
Darrell
HI Dan,
Darrell is the Criminology Track Coordinator so he can help you with the location of the minor. I will
approve what Darrell recommends.
Thanks,

Yes Mike and I talked about this and it makes sense. Let me look for a location in the minor for this. If
you have an idea where it should go please share it with me. Once I have the revised version in place I
will send it to you for final approval.

Leslie,
Presenting it to a couple of colleagues has led me to affirm our participation in the minor. We’d like
them to add CRM 410 World Criminal Justice Systems. Mike talked to Dan about this and he
agreed. Should I email Dan or will you propose that they go ahead and add CRM 410? I circulate it and
will let everyone know it is a done deal and we can count on seeing non-major students in the two
courses in that minor.

Darrell

6. Geography and Geology
Dear Dan,
GGY383 is the only course we offer on a regular basis. The others are not offered consistently, but you
are welcome to include them as they are in the catalog. You may also want to consider GGY340
Population Resource and the Environment. That course covers conflict over resources as part of its
curriculum. It is offered consistently.

7. Anthropology
Hi Dan,
This looks like a potentially interesting minor, and it looks as though the Anthropology classes included
are a good fit. Just a quick note—we don’t offer ANT 300 very often at all, at present, although this may
change in the future.
