EDNL 331: Apprentice Field Experience I (1)

Course Description:

Corequisites: EDN 319, 344, 349. Designed to provide supervised extended experiences in public elementary school classrooms. Students will complete field experience requirements of corequisites and will assist with small group instruction and general classroom responsibilities. Field placement will require four hours, one day per week for entire semester.

Objectives: Upon successfully completing this course, the student should be able to:

1. Analyze personal qualities which may enhance or detract from development as an effective teacher. (ACEI 5.1 & 5.2 , NCPTS V.3)

2. Interact collaboratively and cooperatively with peers, classroom mentor teachers, university supervisors, school personnel, administrators, students, and parents. (ACEI 5.4; NCPTS I.2)

3. Demonstrate an understanding of instructional practices through small group instruction. (ACEI 1 & 4; NCPTS IV2)

4. Demonstrate professionalism in dress, mannerisms, language, and actions. (ACEI 5.1; NCPTS I.5, IV.7)

5. Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills while working with children and adults. (ACEI 3.5, NCPTS IV.7)

6. Demonstrate reflective practice through conversations, inner dialogues and writing for the purposes of analyzing student learning, growing as a professional, and adapting practice as needed. (ACEI 5.2; NCPTS V.1,

V.2, V.3,)

7. Quickly learn teaching routines and classroom management techniques used by the classroom teacher and successfully implement these,

maintaining the principles of a democratic classroom. (ACEI 1, 3.4,

NCPTS I.1, II.3)

Suggested Assignments:

1. Complete field experience requirements as assigned in your corequisite methods courses.

2. Will plan and teach individuals and small groups.

3. Focused observation of a leaner to determine how and why the child is or isn’t learning.

4. Complete focused observations of child development, schedule, routines, classroom management, and student behaviors

5. Attendance and class participation.

Grading Method:

Pass/Fail.
