Facilitator will select the option that they prefer prior to beginning the class with participants. Display the first PowerPoint slide: What makes a good leader? Leaders are reflective. Leaders are innovative. Leaders make complex decisions. Leaders are ethical. Leaders advocate. Allow participants to review the slide and ask themselves, “ In which of these areas do I need to grow as a leader?” Option One - As a whole group, identify two characteristics from the menu to explore. Do the activities associated with those characteristics and come back together as a whole group to discuss. --OR-Option Two - In small groups, choose two or more activities to complete, discuss implications for teacher leadership (What did you learn?). Small groups then report to the whole group. Activities for each of the five leader characteristics are provided on the following pages. These are also found in the participant manual. Study the notion of competence. Conscious incompetence The individual does not know about the topic or skill, and does not see their lack of knowledge as a problem. They will have to see a value in the new knowledge before leaving this stage. Conscious competence The individual knows the topic or skill, however it requires a lot of concentration and effort on the part of the individual. It may have to be written in small steps, or they may have to use a manual. Unconscious incompetence The individual does not know about the topic, but they recognize their lack of knowledge and has a desire to fix it. Unconscious competence The individual has had so much practice with the knowledge or skill that it is second nature to them. They can do this skill along with others. They may also be able to teach others. Consider driving a car. How does a driver move through these four stages when learning to drive? 2. Now consider competence in teaching. Think of a teaching scenario. Role play how a teacher in each stage might act. Also include ‘voice overs’ of the teacher’s inner monologue. Have participants watch the Marshmellow challenge video found at: http://marshmallowchallenge.com/ After watching the video ask these questions: Questions to Consider: 1. Which team did the worst? Why? 2. Which team did the best? Why? 3. What improves performance? 4. How were new ideas generated? Download and print out Leaders Make Complex Decision handout. Each small group should designate one person as the “reader.” Only the reader will receive the handout- “Leaders Make Complex Decisions.” The reader will share the scenario and directions at the top of the page. Then, as directed, share one event at a time, allowing the group members to discuss next steps between the reveal of each event. Word file - “M6-2Classroom Must Haves Values Clarification.” Activity : Exploring Teacher Leadership Activities for Characteristic Four - Leaders at Ethically As priorities and resources change, leaders must make decisions about what is best – best for teaching, best for learning, best for children. However, there is often no clear answer. 1. What questions do ethical leaders consider when deciding what is ‘best’ ? Brainstorm 2-3 questions and compare with your colleagues’ answers. 2. Values Clarification Activity – Read the list of ‘must have’ items below teachers often have in classrooms. Decide which one item you would be willing to teach without. Mark it out and place a ‘1’ next to it. Now, imagine that because of unexpected budget cuts, you must cut 2 more _____ Student Desks _____ Classroom library _____ Tables _____ Bookshelves _____ Student chairs _____ Teacher desk and chair _____ School supplies (pencils/paper/arts/ crafts) _____ Chalkboard/Whiteboard _____ Cabinets or other storage areas _____ Computer(s) items from the list. Mark those out and place a ‘2’ and ‘3’ next to them. Continue making decisions about which items you would give up and number them in the order in which you would let them go. At the end, you will have only one item left on your prioritized list. 3. Choose one of those individuals and write a letter expressing your thoughts and perspectives about an educational topic that is important to you.
