SECTION TWO: Application
Time: 45 minutes
Materials Needed: PowerPoint file - M6-Leadership
Activity 2 : Exploring Teacher Leadership
Two Options for this activity. Facilitator will select the option that they prefer
prior to beginning the class with participants.
Display the first PowerPoint slide: What makes a good leader?

Leaders are reflective.

Leaders are innovative.

Leaders make complex decisions.

Leaders are ethical.

Leaders advocate.
Allow participants to review the slide and ask themselves, “ In which of these
areas do I need to grow as a leader?”
Option One - As a whole group, identify two characteristics from the menu to
explore. Do the activities associated with those characteristics and come back
together as a whole group to discuss.
--OR-Option Two - In small groups, choose two or more activities to complete,
discuss implications for teacher leadership (What did you learn?). Small
groups then report to the whole group.
Activities for each of the five leader characteristics are provided
on the following pages. These are also found in the participant
manual.

SECTION TWO: Application
Time: 45 minutes
Materials Needed: PowerPoint file - M6-Leadership
Activity : Exploring Teacher Leadership
Activities for Characteristic One - Leaders are reflective.
1. Study the notion of competence.
Conscious incompetence The individual does not know
about the topic or skill, and does
not see their lack of knowledge as
a problem. They will have to see a
value in the new knowledge before
leaving this stage.
Conscious competence The individual knows the topic or
skill, however it requires a lot of
concentration and effort on the
part of the individual. It may have
to be written in small steps, or
they may have to use a manual.
Unconscious incompetence The individual does not know
about the topic, but they recognize
their lack of knowledge and has a
desire to fix it.
Unconscious competence The individual has had so much
practice with the knowledge or
skill that it is second nature to
them. They can do this skill along
with others. They may also be able
to teach others.
Consider driving a car. How does a driver move through these four stages
when learning to drive?
2. Now consider competence in teaching.
Think of a teaching scenario. Role play how a teacher in each stage might act.
Also include ‘voice overs’ of the teacher’s inner monologue.

Activity : Exploring Teacher Leadership
Activities for Characteristic Four - Leaders at Ethically
As priorities and resources change, leaders must make decisions about what is
best – best for teaching, best for learning, best for children. However, there is
often no clear answer.
1. What questions do ethical leaders consider when deciding what is ‘best’ ?
Brainstorm 2-3 questions and compare with your colleagues’ answers.
2. Values Clarification Activity – Read the list of ‘must have’ items below
teachers often have in classrooms.
Decide which one item you would be willing to teach without. Mark it out and
place a ‘1’ next to it.
Now, imagine that because of unexpected budget cuts, you must cut 2 more
_____ Student Desks
_____ Classroom library
_____ Tables
_____ Bookshelves
_____ Student chairs
_____ Teacher desk and chair
_____ School supplies (pencils/paper/arts/
crafts)
_____ Chalkboard/Whiteboard
_____ Cabinets or other storage areas
_____ Computer(s)
items from the list. Mark those out and place a ‘2’ and ‘3’ next to them.
Continue making decisions about which items you would give up and number
them in the order in which you would let them go.
At the end, you will have only one item left on your prioritized list.
3. Now go back and evaluate your decisions based on the ethical questions you
