Course requirements for all UNCW degrees include: (1) Basic Studies, (2) specific major requirements, and
(3) sufficient elective hours for a combined total of a minimum of 124 hours.

Option 1. General Sociology: This option enables students to further their understanding and appreciation of SOC. It allows students to
take courses in a broad range of SOC topics. This option is recommended for students who plan to attend graduate or professional school.

Honors Work in Sociology (2-3) Prerequisite: Eligibility for honors program and senior standing
Choose 24 additional hours of SOC course electives. A maximum of 9 hours below the 300 level
(including SOC 105) may be used to satisfy these requirements.
Option 2. Public Sociology: This option provides intensive training in using SOC to inform real life social issues. In this program
students choose one of three concentrations: Diversity and Inequality, Health and Aging, or Human Resources.

Choose 18-21 additional hours of SOC courses as designated by concentration area. Students who take
SOC 496 must take 18 hours of SOC in their concentration area. Students who take SOC 498 must take
21 hours of SOC in their concentration area. Students must earn a “C” (2.00) or better in SOC 390 in
order to take SOC 496 or 498. A maximum of 9 hours below the 300 level (including SOC 105) may be
used to satisfy these requirements.
Courses required for each concentration area in Public Sociology:
Diversity and Inequality: SOC 325, 350, 366 and 380; and either 2 or 3 of the following courses (2 if taking SOC *496, 3 if taking

Health and Aging:
SOC 220, 305, 336 and 337; and either 2 or 3 of the following courses (2 if taking SOC *496, 3 if taking

Human Resources:
SOC 340, 365, 380 and 486; and either 2 or 3 of the following courses (2 if taking SOC *496, 3 if taking

**Social Studies Teacher Licensure: In addition to completing requirements for the major, SOC majors seeking licensure in social studies must
complete the Teacher Education Program requirements and a minimum of 21 collateral hours including +HST 101, +102, +103, +201, +202, and
+PLS 101, and at least one course in each of the following areas: economics and geography.

planning to pursue licensure should apply to the Watson School of Education as soon as admissions requirements are met (typically in the sophomore
year) and plan their programs in regular consultation with their advisors. Teacher licensure requirements are established at the state level and may be
changed by the state at any time.
An overall average of “C” (2.00) or better is required among courses taken to satisfy the requirements of the major. Only one “D” is
permitted among the core courses of SOC 105, 300, 301 and 360.
