Nursing and Health Care in Vietnam
A delegation of nursing professionals traveled to Vietnam this fall in November with People to
People Citizen Ambassador Programs. People to People Citizen Ambassador Programs arranges
substantive professional exchanges. As a delegation member, I had an opportunity to share my
health care expertise and discuss new approaches and ideas about health care delivery and
nursing with my counterparts throughout Vietnam. This delegation’s itinerary allowed us to
collaborate with respected leaders in Vietnam, to investigate the health care system, public
health, practice and education of nurses in Vietnam, and the health care issues in rural Vietnam.
Our delegation made a total of five professional visits in Vietnam, at four hospitals and one
school of medicine and nursing. At the School of Medicine in Ho Chi Ming City, I presented my
current program of research focusing on teaching nurse practitioner and social work students
delivery of difficult health news to those with serious illness. This presentation will focus on
health care trends and nursing care services in Vietnam, in both the public and private sectors.
