(3) sufficient elective hours for a combined total of a minimum of 124 hours.

Option 1. General Sociology: This option enables students to further their understanding and appreciation of SOC. It allows students to take courses in a broad range of SOC topics. This option is recommended for students who plan to attend graduate or professional school.

Choose 24 additional hours of SOC course electives. A maximum of 9 hours below the 300 level
(including SOC 105) may be used to satisfy these requirements.
Option 2. Public Sociology: This option provides intensive training in using SOC to inform real life social issues. In this program students choose one of three concentrations: Diversity and Inequality, Health and Aging , or Human Resources.

SOC 496 must take 18 hours of SOC in their concentration area. Students who take SOC 498 must take
21 hours of SOC in their concentration area. Students must earn a “C” (2.00) or better in SOC 390 in order to take SOC 496 or 498. A maximum of 9 hours below the 300 level (including SOC 105) may be used to satisfy these requirements.
Concentration area in Public Sociology: (18 hours)
With the help of the public sociology coordinator, students design a substantive area of focus for the Public Sociology Program, identifying six three-hour courses in the area.
**Social Studies Teacher Licensure: In addition to completing requirements for the major, SOC majors seeking licensure in social studies must complete the Teacher Education Program requirements and a minimum of 21 collateral hours including +HST 101, +102, +103, +201, +202, and
+PLS 101, and at least one course in each of the following areas: economics and geography.

Students planning to pursue licensure should apply to the Watson School of Education as soon as admissions requirements are met (typically in the sophomore year) and plan their programs in regular consultation with their advisors. Teacher licensure requirements are established at the state level and may be changed by the state at any time.
An overall average of “C” (2.00) or better is required among courses taken to satisfy the requirements of the major. Only one “D” is permitted among the core courses of SOC 105, 300, 301 and 360.
