Course requirements for all UNCW degrees include: (1) University Studies, (2) specific major requirements, and (3)
sufficient elective hours for a combined total of a minimum of 124 hours.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS - SOC (Minimum 39 hours)

College Algebra (3) Prerequisite: Satisfactory performance on the UNCW MAT Placement Test

Methods of Social Research (3) Prerequisites: SOC 105 or CRM 105. Pre/Coreq: MAT 111 or
score of 4 or higher on UNCW Math Placement test. (Meets Applied Learning Requirement)

Sociological Data Analysis & Interpretation (3) Prereqs: SOC 300 or CRM 300, MAT 111 or
score of a 4 or higher on UNCW Math Placement Test.

Social Theory (3) Prerequisites: SOC 105 and 6 additional hours in SOC
Option 1: General Sociology: This option is recommended for students who plan to attend graduate or professional school.

Practicum in Public Sociology (6) Prerequisites: SOC 300, 301, 360, 390, junior/senior
standing, and instructor consent

Concentration - 18 Hrs: With the help of the public sociology coordinator, students design a

substantive area of focus for the Public Sociology Program, identifying six three-hour courses in

the area. A Maximum of 9 hours below the 300-level (including SOC 105 may be used to satisfy

the above requirements.

An overall average of “C” (2.00) or better is required among courses taken to satisfy the requirements of the major. Only
one “D” is permitted among the core courses of SOC 105, 300, 301, and 360.
NOTE: To satisfy the Oral Communication Competency Requirement, a student must successfully complete SOC
490, 496 or 498.
