JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Laboratory Animal Technician III
POSITION INFORMATION: Observes, feeds, transfers, tests, restrains, and administers pharmaceuticals to laboratory
animals, maintains laboratory, collects samples, maintains records, and acts as the lead Technician.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Observation. Observes animals for early manifestations of disease such as rapid or labored breathing, or lethargy and
reports to designated personnel. Examines incoming animals to ensure compliance with specifications. Rejects
unsuitable animals.
2.
Feeding. Provides food and water to laboratory animals. Prepares special diets by weighing and combining
ingredients.
3.
Transferring. Transfers animals from soiled to clean enclosures, etc., protecting individual identity of animals.
4.
Laboratory Maintenance. Ensures laboratory has stable temperature, and humidity level. Remains alert to elements
in the environment that might adversely affect the health and stability of the animals. Ensures all equipment, bedding,
cages, etc. are clean and in working condition. Reports any problems or deviations to designated personnel.
5.
Sample Collection. Collects blood, tissue, or fluid samples from animals.
6.
Restraint. Restrains animals for examination or injection.
7.
Pharmaceutical Administration. Administers pharmaceutical or biological products through intramuscular,
subcutaneous, oral, or topical route.
8.
Record maintenance. Maintains detailed records of observations and activities such as breeding cycles,
reproduction, isotope usage, behavior, and health status.
9.
Testing. Performs routine laboratory testing such as urinalysis, blood count, and examination for parasites.
10.
Lead Employee. Acts as the lead Laboratory Animal Technician for the laboratory by answering questions, serving
as an example employee, etc.
11.
As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: 36 months experience caring for laboratory animals
Certifications/ Licenses:
Equivalent/ Substitution: AALAS Certification as an Animal Technician OR an Associate’s degree plus 12 months
experience caring for laboratory animals OR a Bachelor’s degree in biological science will qualify an applicant
