Closing the Gap in STEM Subjects
with Arts Integration
This multifaceted program, offered free
for all educators, has been designed
through a collaborative initiative between
the Cameron Art Museum and the
Southeast Center for Arts Integration to
incorporate elements of both arts
integrated and hands-on learning
experiences with Mathematics, Science
and Engineering concepts.
School systems in the eight county region
may schedule workshops in their county in
a variety of formats by contacting Martha
Burdette, Curator of Education at
mburdette@cameronartmuseum.org
• 1 to 2-hour sessions
• half-day sessions
• on designated for teacher professional
development days
• during or after school hours
In order to provide a reasonable ratio of
facilitators to teachers, and we require a
10 teacher minimum and 30 teacher
maximum for each workshop.
Our Rationale
It is well documented that traditional
textbooks and verbal instruction in
Mathematics and Science often fail to
engage the portions of the brain that are
needed to truly comprehend and apply
the concepts essential to deep
understanding of Mathematics and
Science.
The Cameron began offering Closing the
Gap workshops in 2012 and immediately
received enthusiastic response from
participating educators. These
workshops are built on strategies that
foster deep understanding by engaging
the whole brain and offering opportunities
for both concrete and abstract
experiences. They address multiple
strands of the North Carolina State
Curriculum for Science and Mathematics
for grades Pre-K-8 and are taught by
educators who are highly experienced in
providing experiential collaborative
learning experiences to both education
professionals and to students.
