Dr. Dean Hummel of Millersburg, OH, the first Virginia Tech Program Leader in Counselor Education, was honored at Kent State University on October 4th with the Distinguished Centennial Alumni Award. The Centennial Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a former student that graduated more than fifty years ago from a program within the KSU College of Education, Health, & Human Services. The award recognizes an alumnus who has made significant contributions to society, whose accomplishments and career have brought honor and distinction to Kent State University, and who has advanced the field of education, health, and human services. Dean was President of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and Department Chair of Counselor Education @ Ohio University prior to arriving at Virginia Tech in 1970. He, along with Carl McDaniels, started the counselor education program @ VT and that foundation propelled is success. She is excited to be focused on engaging alumni in the College and departments. She comes to us from the University of Tennessee Alumni Association and brings a lot of experience with her working with alumni chapters and colleges. She grew up in Christiansburg, VA. Her father is a 1974 graduate of Tech and her mother is a life-long music teacher for grades K-2. She says, "Education is at the cusp of what the university is about and it touches every person, so education is pivotal in engagement and outreach."
