Climate Change and the Coast: What Are We in For? with Dr. Donald F. Boesch President, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science D onald F. Boesch is a professor at and president of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. He also serves as vice chancellor for environmental sustainability for the University System of Maryland. Boesch is a biological oceanographer who has conducted research on coastal and continental shelf ecosystems in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, eastern Australia and the East China Sea. He has published two books and 90 papers on marine benthos, estuarine and continental shelf ecology, wetlands, oil pollution, nutrient over-enrichment, environmental assessment and science policy. the University of Queensland, a faculty member at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the first executive director of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium and professor of marine science at Louisiana State University. B oesch is active in extending knowledge to environmental and resource management at regional, national and international levels. Presently, his research focuses on the use of science in ecosystem-based management and on assessments and adaptation strategies related to climate change. Boesch has served on several standing boards and study committees of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences and on numerous federal agency and regional advisory boards. He served as a science advisor to both the Pew Oceans Commission and the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and is currently on a federal advisory committee preparing an assessment of impacts of global warming on the United States. B oesch earned his B.S. from Tulane University and Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary.
