The Pathways to Practice Scholars program allows current public health students to gain practical experience while mentored by seasoned practitioners serving or working on behalf of underserved communities or populations. Funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Region IV Public Health Training Center (R-IV PHTC) Student Scholar positions will be located in the eight R-IV states, including North Carolina. POSITION DESCRIPTION: The student scholars will: Assist with community health assessment data collection and analyzing data collected Receive teaching status for the Stanford Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self-Management Classes Plan and implement Self-Management classes among Columbus County faith organizations Develop substance abuse prevention campaign for specific neighborhoods in Columbus County Conduct an evaluation of substance abuse prevention grant implementation efforts THE STUDENT WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN: 1) Community Health Assessment – data collection and evaluation 2) Instructing Diabetes Self-Management Classes 3) Evaluating substance abuse prevention implementation efforts 4) Developing substance abuse prevention campaign PUBLIC HEALTH COMPETENCIES/SKILLS STUDENT MAY STRENGTHEN DURING PLACEMENT: 1) Analytic/Assessment 2) Policy Development/Program Planning 3) Communication 4) Cultural Competency 5) Community Dimensions of Practice 6) Public Health Science HOUSING INFORMATION: If the candidate is selected, the agency can provide informational resources or contacts to search for low cost rental housing. TRAVEL: In county travel will be no more than 3 days per week POSITION TYPE: Region IV Public Health Training Center Field Placements (for undergraduate public health students in North Carolina) QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY: Candidates must be undergraduate public health students from accredited schools and programs of public health located in North Carolina. Students graduating after December 2016 are not eligible for this position. Your cover letter should include the agency name and citizenship or visa status. WORK AUTHORIZATION: U.S. Citizen, Permanent U.S. Resident Citizenship statement: The Region IV Public Health Training Center is a federally-funded program which has a citizenship requirement.
