Isle Royale National Park Camping and Kayaking Adventure July 15-21, 2016 A Beyond BOW weekend of sea kayaking and island exploration. This workshop is being offered in partnership with the Door County Adventure Center. Suitable for those who have some experience or formal instruction. Our participants range in age from 18-80+. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. All equipment, lodging (hotel and camping) and meals included in the registration fee. Trip Description Isle Royale National Park preserves 132,018 acres of federally designated wilderness. According to the National Park Service, around 11,000 years ago, two miles of ice pressed down on Isle Royale, sculpting its topography. This same ice sheet formed Lake Superior and hundreds of inland lakes, ponds and bogs. Isle Royale is a fascinating ecosystem to explore. Long-time BOW instructor, professional kayaker, guide and outfitter Tim Pflieger, along with a cadre of talented instructors, will provide a guided/outfitted experience kayaking and camping throughout this adventure. We’ll explore coastal and inland habitats as well as some of the cultural features of the island including lighthouses, maritime exhibits, and the Windigo Visitor Center. Our program begins at 3:00 pm on Friday, July 15 with a meet/greet and gear/kayak fit at the Bella Vista Hotel in Copper Harbor, Michigan followed by dinner. The adventure begins the next morning when we catch the ferry, with our kayaks and gear, to Rock Harbor on the east end of Isle Royale. Each night we’ll camp at a new site. Each day we will paddle 10-15 miles to our next location, set up camp, then explore a new part of the island. This BOW Adventure is for paddlers who have some experience or formal instruction, or have participated in a Beyond BOW kayaking workshop or trip.
