OBJECTIVES
This Programme will provide opportunities to Urdu graduates to acquire a deeper
insight in the Language and Literature and upgrade their qualifications. It will
enhance and reinforce creativity, understanding, teaching and critical appreciation of
Urdu Literature.
2.
RATIONALE
This programme offers a broad understanding of Urdu language and literature and is
meant to help students enhance critical thinking across the curriculum. It will also
consolidate and upgrade linguistic skills so that learners may demonstrate mastery
over the language and its literature while analysing and criticising literary texts.
They will also be familiar with all the major trends in literature in general.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the programme students will be able to

Demonstrate skills in synthesizing and analysing concepts in various texts.
Acquire awareness of different trends and issues in Urdu literature.

10.
ASSESSMENT
All modules will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows unless otherwise
specified:

For a student to pass a module, an overall total of 40 % for combined Continuous
Assessment (CA) and Written Examination (WE) components would be required,
without minimum thresholds within the individual Continuous Assessment and
Written Examination components. The same criteria will apply for modules being
assessed jointly. Note that all overall marks for the two modules will be considered
and not the individual marks for each of the two modules.
Assessment will be based on Written Examinations of 3-hour duration carrying 70%
of total marks and Continuous Assessment carrying 30% of total marks.
Continuous assessment will be based on seminars/presentations/assignments/class
tests.
There is no level attached to modules, i.e. each modules carries its credit value.

11. Choice of Electives
Students will be required to submit their choice of electives in order of priority by the middle
of Semester 1 of year 1.
The University/ MGI reserve the right not to offer a given elective module if the critical
number of students is not attained and/or for reasons of resource constraints.
12. Dissertation
Students will be required to write between 10,000 to 14,000 words on an original based topic
which is relevant to the subject and approved by the Departmental Board assisted by a
supervisor. Guidance in research methodology will be provided.
The dissertation will include a Viva Voce conducted by a panel including the supervisor
Deadline to submit proposal for dissertation is the first week of July of level I. Dissertation
should be original and research based
