1.
Objectives
This Programme will provide opportunities to Urdu graduates to acquire a deeper insight in the
Language and Literature and upgrade their qualifications. It will enhance and reinforce creativity,
understanding, teaching and critical appreciation of Urdu Literature.
It will also consolidate and upgrade linguistic skills so that learners may demonstrate mastery over
the language and its literature while analysing and criticising literary texts. They will also be
familiar with all the major trends in literature in general.

Assessment
All modules will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows unless otherwise specified:

Assessment will be based on Written Examinations of 3-hour duration carrying 70% of total
marks and Continuous Assessment carrying 30% of total marks.
Continuous assessment will be based on seminars/presentations/assignments/class tests.
There is no level attached to modules, i.e. each modules carries its credit value.

For a student to pass a module, an overall total of 40 % for combined Continuous
Assessment (CA) and Written Examination (WE) components would be required, without
minimum thresholds within the individual Continuous Assessment and Written Examination
components. The same criteria will apply for modules being assessed jointly. Note that all
overall marks for the two modules will be considered and not the individual marks for each
of the two modules.

Choice of Electives
Students will be required to submit their choice of electives in order of priority by the middle of
Semester 1 of year 1.
The University/ MGI reserve the right not to offer a given elective module if the critical number of

Outline Syllabus
URM 5101 - HISTORY OF URDU LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
This module will provide an opportunity for students to delve deep into the genesis of Urdu and synchronize
the various stages of its development. It will also provide scope to equip students with knowledge of the
literary development of Urdu up to 1947. The socio- political background will be scrutinized to help students
better understand major trends in Urdu literature.
UMR 5102 - URDU GHAZAL (CLASSICAL, MEDIEVAL AND MODERN)
This module will provide an in-depth study of the Urdu Ghazal. The socio-cultural background of the
Ghazal in the 18th , 19th and 20th centuries will be the focus of attention. Selected Poets and their Ghazals
will be studied to enhance the understanding of this genre.
URM 5103 - URDU FICTION (DASTAAN, NOVEL AND AFSANA)
This module provides scope for studying classical Urdu prose writing in its broad perspective and the
subsequent development of the Novel and Short Story as two specific literary genres. It will also enhance the
skills of students through thematic studies as major trends in Urdu literature will be the focal point.

URM 5104 - LITERARY CRITICISM
This module will provide an in-depth study of literary criticism. It will focus on the nature and importance
of the memoirs (Tazkira) in the history of Urdu criticism as well as their scope. It will also cover classical
and modern critics of the Subcontinent and the West. Students will also be acquainted with the different
schools of criticism.
URM 5208 - URDU PROSE (NON-FICTION)
This module aims at a thorough study of Non-Fiction Urdu prose such as Essays, Biographies, Sketches,
Reportages, Travelogues, Letters etc. Emphasis will also be laid on the styles and techniques of prominent
literateurs in these fields.
URM 5209 - URDU NAZM (SINCE 1857)
This module will enhance students’ knowledge of Urdu Nazm since the Mutiny of the Sepoys (1857). It will
deal mainly with the various trends in modern Urdu poetry and will focus essentially on poems written
during the post– Independence period. (1947)
URM 5210 - SPECIAL STUDY OF AN AUTHOR
This module consists of two options. Students will have to opt for an in-depth study of either a poet or prose
writer. Emphasis will be laid on his/her biography and the socio-political context of his/her period. While
studying his/her major works, students will keep in mind his/her style and understand his/her impact on
his/her contemporaries and other poets/writers of the coming generations.
URM 5211 - QASIDA, MARSIYA AND MASNAWI (Classical Urdu Panegyrics, Elegies, Epics And Narrative
Poems)
Students will undertake an in-depth study of the Qasida, Marsiya and Masnavi. The Arabo-Persian impact
on Urdu poetry and its subsequent influence on the classical forms of Urdu Poetry will be scrutinized.
Textual studies of the above mentioned genres will be carried out in detail.
URM 5000 - DISSERTATION
A dissertation equivalent to 12 credits of about 10,000 to 14,000 words. Lectures in Research Methodology
will also be provided in year 1 so that students are sufficiently equipped and feel confident to write their
dissertation. Dissertation should be original and research based.
The dissertation will include a Viva Voce conducted by a panel including the supervisor

URM 5105 - WOMEN’S LITERATURE IN URDU
This module will focus on the contribution of women writers in Urdu literature. It will examine their
thematic contents and the problems women face in society as well as other difficulties they encounter.
URM 5106 - URDU DRAMA
Students will be acquainted with the concept of unities, plot, characterization, climax, anticlimax and the art
of the stage as well as the difference between tragedy, comedy and melodrama. They will also have the
opportunity to study the origin of Urdu drama and its development till the 20th century. A classical Urdu
play will be studied in detail.
URM 5107 - MEDIA AND TRANSLATION
This module will trace the part played by Urdu in the media prior to the independence of India and will
focus on its development in the Subcontinent in the modern age. Students will also analyse and translate
various texts in a variety of situations for the mass media.
