Fifth‐Year Master’s Degree Program Offering Teaching Certification in English If you are currently majoring in English, are graduating in the Fall of 2010 or later, and have a GPA or 2.75 or higher, and you want to be a teacher, you can apply to our newly created 5th year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. In three semesters you will earn a Master’s degree and your teaching certification. This full time program has limited enrollment, and offers financial assistance. You apply in your senior year. General admission requirements: Transcript evaluation of content requirements; One year time limitation – must begin program within one year of graduation; and 2.75 GPA, no Praxis I unless already attempted and not passed. 2. Pass the required PRAXIS II content examinations: English Language, Literature & Composition: Content Knowledge (Test 0041) and English Language, Literature & Composition: Essays (Test 0042). 3. Hold a degree in English that includes courses in the following areas: a. 6 hours in Composition and Rhetoric (WRIT 101 & CRTW 201) b. 3 hours Composition and Rhetoric above 299‐level with emphasis in theory and pedagogy (WRIT 350) c. Development of Modern English and Modern English Grammar (may be covered in one or more courses) (ENGL 507 and ENGL 303) d. 3 hours in each of the following areas of literature: British, American, World, and Adolescent (ENGL 203, ENGL 211, ENGL 208, ENGE 519) e. 3 hours of additional coursework in literature (Strongly Recommended: Shakespeare) f. Literary Criticism (ENGL 300) We know that some of these courses currently don’t “count” in the LLAN and WRIT tracks. The Department is beginning curriculum actions that will allow you to take all the required courses and count them toward your undergraduate degrees. When those actions pass, we’ll initiate a blanket petition to cover all pre‐existing catalogs so that these allowances will show up in Wingspan and Degree Works. That won’t happen until at least Spring 2011 because of the bureaucracy, but be assured that we are working on it!
