General Education Committee Minutes, 11/16/11 Members present: S. Caro, M. Dazey, J. DeBoer, A. Sillars, D. Sloan, E. Uchimoto, N. White Ex-Officio Members Present: E. Johnson Members absent: E. Adams, J. Luckowski, J. Rabinovitch D. Simpson The minutes from 10/19/11 were amended and approved. Communication: Professor Susan Caro from the Mansfield Library was welcomed to the committee. She will be taking Professor Dazey’s place. Business Items: The “E” attribute has been removed from the GLI course BADM 191. The instructor has submitted a revised syllabus that includes reading assignments in “Business Ethics.” However, the subcommittee still is not convinced that the course meets the criteria. Chair DeBoer will contact the subcommittee members in attempt to understand their position considering the instructor is somewhat offended. There is concern that the subcommittee is being too harsh. It was asked whether there was a precedent for the parent committee to override the subcommittee. There were similar sentiments expressed in 2008 when all the general education courses were reviewed. Camie will provide Chair Deboer with the background documentation. The following actions were taken on the remaining general education courses. Chair Deboer will follow-up with MCLL, EVST and Social Work. VI Historical & Cultural Studies MCLL HSTR 301 MCLL HSTR 304 X: Indigenous & Global MCLL HSTR 302 Journalism JOUR 165 History of Greece History of Rome Greek Social History Global Current Events / Honors Vote (Professors Luckoski and Rabinovitch sent votes via email prior to meeting) 5 yes, 2 no 5 yes, 2 no 7 no, will approve for IX American & European- 5 yes, 2 no 6 yes, 1 abstention III: Exception (Symbolic Systems) EVST Unanimous approval with caveat that EVST change its major requirements to include foreign language and waive requirement for transfer students. This approach Social Work will be easier to manage than the 40 credit transfer rule. The department will need to follow-up with program modification form to ASCRC. 6 no, 1 abstention The Deadline memo was revised and approved. The deadline was changed to the end of February. Courses that were approved in fall 2009 or later are exempt from the rolling review until 2016. The meeting was adjourned at 5:35 PM.
