Guest: John Douglas, Chair, Anthropology
Chair Erickson called the meeting to order at 12:10p.m
The 11/7/07 minutes were approved after the discussion with Professor Douglas.
Communication:

Professor Douglas distributed responses to the Graduate Council’s concerns regarding
the title change of the Anthropology PhD program. The title on the original proposal
was chosen by the former Provost. It is awkward and doesn’t reflect what the
program is. The original proposal specifically referenced applied anthropology a
couple of times. The mission of the PhD has always been broad and is not expanding
with the title change. The controlling size factor is the number of students a faculty
member can advise. The intent is to involve the entire faculty in the program. The
department has added three new faculty since the program was approved.

The search committee informed the Provost’s Office that all the dean candidates
would be acceptable and then listed the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Business Items:
Curriculum review – Social Science Subcommittee
The title change for the Anthropology PhD was approved with 3 abstentions.
Humanities Subcommittee Follow-up
The Drama department agreed to remove the UG designation from DRAM UG 307.
There has not yet been a response from History regarding the UG courses. Environmental
Studies signed the proposal for PHIL 504, so it was approved.
The Council did not approve ENLT UG 381 repeatable for 9 credits, repeatable for 6
credits would be acceptable or the department should resubmit at the 400 level.
Science Subcommittee
The items on the summary highlighted for approval were approved. Follow-up is
pending for several courses and a level II proposal in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical
Sciences, a joint level I with DBS and Biomed and several Physical Therapy Courses.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
