Pre-Departure Sessions: Conducted monthly, from January-May 2014
Following participant selection, participants will engage in four monthly webinars and at least
one in-person meeting to develop group cohesion, review program expectations, conduct
individual research reports, and develop service activities.
Program: June 15-July 11, 2014
Days 1-3: Sunday, June 15 – Tuesday, June 17: Orientation in Missoula, Montana

Keynote lecture: “Climate Change: Montana in a Global Context”
Administrative Sessions:






Mandatory session with guardians on participant responsibilities and consequences.
Extended group introductions and ice-breaker activities.
Security, safety, health, food, transportation, and communication issues.
Guidelines for effective program participation including respect for the views of others,
the host culture, host families, and Cambodian partner students and instructors.
Discussion of culture shock.
Welcome barbecue by the Clark Fork River.
Academic sessions:

Sessions on Cambodian history, language and culture:
o Cambodian History and Culture
o Introduction to Cambodian Environmental Policies
o Khmer Language Basics
o Student presentations on individual research topics
Field Study: Visit to Milltown Dam: Largest Superfund Site in the U.S.

Days 4-5: Wednesday, June 18 – Thursday, June 19: Travel to Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Days 6-10: Friday, June 20 – Tuesday, June 24: Phnom Penh
Lodging: Small, central hotel

US Embassy briefing
Visits to partner high schools
Sessions on Cambodian government, history, and culture
Discussions with local NGOs on proposed dam projects
Visit to Tuol Sleng (S-21) and Choueng Ek (Killing Fields)
Cultural visits to the Royal Palaces, Silver Pagoda, and Wat Phnom
Days 11 – 15: Wednesday, June 25 – Sunday, June 29: Kampot Province and Gulf of Thailand
Lodging: Small hotel or bungalow




Visit mangroves and environmental projects
Learn about community eco-tourism efforts and social entrepreneurism
Two days/one night at Rabbit Island
Service Project
Day 16: Monday, June 30: Travel to Battambang
Days 17 - 22: Tuesday, July 1- Sunday, July 6: Battambang
Lodging: Host families







Visit to neighboring village to discuss with locals about natural resource management –
logging and mining.
Countryside cycling tour to visit with small communities and learn about local economies
and rural culture.
Market visit and cooking class
Fourth of July cultural exchange celebration and activities
Service Project
Visit to Phnom Sampeu (the “Killing Caves”) – mountain hike to monastery
Agricultural field visits to speak with local farmers about agricultural issues and climate
change
Days 23 - 26: Monday, July 7 - Thursday, July 10: Siem Reap
Lodging: Host families

Tonle Sap – fishing, bird biodiversity, and invasive plant species



Guided tours – Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, Terrace of the Elephants, Terrace of the
Leper King
Service project
Celebration of the start of Ramadan
Day 26, Thursday, July 10: Depart Siem Reap for Missoula
Day 27, Friday, July 11: Participants met by guardians in Missoula to return home
Service Project Implementation:

Upon return from Cambodia, you will implement a service project in your community.
The service project timeframe is somewhat flexible, depending on individual projects, but
most projects will be completed by December 31, 2014.
