Background: In 1995, Mahaska County establish a recycling center. Not
only has the center provided recycling functions, but marketing and
educational functions as well. Additional recycling centers have been
established in other area communities over the past year.
Purpose: To encourage the use of these centers, Mahaska County
Extension Service proposed a three-day workshop series for youth ages
9-12, focusing on environmental education, specifically related to
recycling, decision-making and community services. Through education
and skills building, youth were empowered to educate community
members regarding environmentally and ecologically sound choices via
mass media and one-on-one consultation.

Three Day Workshop
Workshops were held at four rural locations in Mahaska County and
consisted of 9 hours of instruction. The workshops consisted of field trips
to community businesses practicing recycling programs, recycling and
decision-making activities, and crafts and exercises supporting recycling
and ecological actions. Objectives for the workshop included: 1. Youth
implementing and promoting recycling activities in their communities so
that 50% of the area households and business participate in a recycling
program, 50% of the area households adopt at least three sound
ecological habits and creating an array of visual promotional tools that
would be displayed throughout the community. 2. Participants will
develop skills in advertising and mass media education, feel a sense of
ownership for their community recycling programs, exhibit environmentally
and ecologically sound decision-making and eagerly participate in future
community service projects.

self-response survey at the completion of the workshop. Community
household evaluations were also done through telephone surveys. Fortyfour youth took part in the workshops. The response from the workshops
was very positive both from youth and area households and showed great
impact. Much media exposure was also generated as a result of the
workshops. Detailed information regarding the evaluation process is in
the final project report which is kept on file at the Wisconsin Center for
Environmental Education.
