It’s a Jungle Out There!
Coordinator of Specialized Testing Services Jarret Dyer
was one of more than a dozen COD Cares Action Heroes
who recently spent an afternoon removing invasive plants
and brush to restore the beautiful trails at Parson's Grove at
Danada Forest Preserve in Wheaton. Click here to learn

Shake, Rattle and Roll!
Hundreds of residents turned out for a summer evening
of classic rock n’ roll at the McAninch Art Center's
Lakeside Pavilion performance featuring Elvis tribute
artist Scot Bruce. The crowd enjoyed the King’s greatest
hits as part of the MAC’s second annual summer
Lakeside Pavilion series. The free entertainment
continues with percussionist, saxophonist, composer and
band leader Johnny Blas & His Afro-Libre Orchestra, in
partnership with WDCB 90.9 FM, tonight, Aug. 6, at
7:30 p.m., followed by a New Philharmonic performance
of light classical, Broadway and film hits on Saturday,
Aug. 7, at 7:30 p.m. Click here for more images from last
weekend’s Shake, Rattle and Roll concert.
Citizen Sleuths
College of DuPage recently celebrated the graduation of more
than three dozen participants from its inaugural eight-week
Citizen's Public Safety Academy. The academy included
instruction on the different aspects of public safety including:
emergency response, FEMA, law enforcement, fire science and
many other occupations related to this area. The culminating
group exercise included a mock crime scene investigation on
the immersive street scene at the Homeland Security Education
Center that incorporated many of the learning objectives from
the previous seven weeks. Click here for more photos.
(Left to right) Students Paul Park, Iryna Mialik, Daniel
Fernandez, Frank Giuliani and Shyama Pandya are currently
participating in summer chemistry research internships at
Fermilab, Northwestern University and Hope College in
Michigan as part of the College Foundation’s Resource for
Excellence Grant program. The Resource for Excellence Grant
program provides funding to test new ideas, pilot new programs
or methods, or conduct research. This is the second year that
Chemistry Professor Richard Jarman and Assistant Chemistry
Professor Gary Roby have secured funding through the
program, which covers expenses for these research
opportunities. Read More
Student Robert Zill (left)
is spending his summer at
the University of
Wisconsin-River Falls
working on IceCube, the
Antarctic-based neutrino
cosmology experiment.
IceCube is a particle
detector telescope located
at the South Pole that
records interactions of
nearly massless subatomic particles called neutrinos. The
telescope searches for dark matter that can reveal the physical
processes associated with the origins of the highest energy
particles. Zill’s internship is going so well that he has already
been selected as a backup candidate to travel to the McMurdo
Research Station in Antarctica and the South Pole during winter
break. “I am so excited that I am even being considered to go to
Antarctica,” he said. “I am very thankful to Professor Tom
Carter for pointing me in this direction.” Read More
Starbuck’s Karyn
Schlecht recently led
a coffee tasting class on
espresso that included
tastings of two different
brews paired with
brownies, along with a
comparison of how each
brew impacts how a
person tastes. The next
coffee class will be held
in late August or early
September.
Kudos to…the Facilities, Planning and Development team
for the LEED Gold award recently received for the Physical
Education Center renovation. Click here to read more.
More Kudos to…Becky Benkert and Lara Tompkins, Learning
Technologies, who will present at the 13th annual Supporting
Learning and Technology in Education (SLATE) conference at the
Naperville NIU campus in October. Their presentation will cover
the new Online Student Orientation they created for new online
students before they start their courses. The orientation includes
student success stories and invites new students to upload ideas,
tips, study strategies, etc., creating an interactive online
community that will grow and evolve through these contributions.
More Kudos to…the Graphic Design students listed here who
were selected as 2015 Adobe Design Achievement Semifinalists.

More Kudos to…Assistant English Professor Tim Henningsen
whose English 1102 students recently received a “kudos” on a
Wikipedia education blog focusing on positive contributions
made by college and university student to the site.
Even More Kudos to…Architecture Professor Mark Pearson
whose student-created design build project from last summer was
featured this week in an article titled, “Best Student Work
