THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR
By William Shakespeare
Adapted by Daniel Gordon
A Shakespeare Carolina production
August 20 – 23 and 27 – 30 at 8 p.m.
WINTHROP AMPHITHEATRE
Down on his luck, the roguish Falstaff takes on a close-knit southern community, swindling
and seducing as he goes. He soon finds that he has bitten off more than he can chew when
Mistress Ford and Mistress Page decide to take their revenge. With a trick or two up their
respective sleeves, the ladies set out to teach both Falstaff and their husbands a lesson.
Tickets: $5, $3 with Welcome Week Pass
JEFFREY
By Paul Rudnick
September 30 – October 3 at 8 p.m.
October 4 at 2 p.m.
JOHNSON STUDIO THEATRE
Jeffrey finds the pursuit of love and just plain old physical gratification to be the
number-one preoccupation of his time — and the source of plenty of hilarity.
Suddenly, just after he’s reconciled himself to celibacy, Jeffrey’s flamboyant friends
introduce him to the man of his dreams, who also happens to be HIV-positive.
What follows is an audacious and moving romantic comedy with a difference
— one in which the quest for love and really fabulous clothes meet, and where
unflagging humor prevails even when tragedy might be just around the corner.

MAN + LAND + WATER
THE 39 STEPS
RUTLEDGE GALLERY
Adapted by Patrick Barlowe
From the novel by John Buchan
October 28 – 31 at 8 p.m.
November 1 at 2 p.m.
In conjunction with the upcoming Water in the World: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Access and
Sustainability Conference, the semester long exhibition “Man + Land + Water” creates a visual dialog
examining global water issues to raise awareness about the earth’s fragility, water’s preciousness and
how our human role impacts this precarious situation. The exhibition brings together national and
international artists and designers exploring the current global condition and creative solutions to issues
of access and sustainability through video, drawing, interactive media, printmaking, industrial and
graphic design.
Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty
Python and you have "The 39 Steps," a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who
loves the magic of theatre! This two-time Tony® and Drama Desk Awardwinning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, more than 150 zany characters
(played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an on-stage plane crash,
handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance!
September 21 – November 13
Opening Reception, September 25, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Free and open to the public

Opening Reception, September 25, 6:30 – 8 p.m.

ELIZABETH DUNLAP PATRICK GALLERY
The water quality in our world's oceans is at a critical tipping point. Plastic pollution is a primary
culprit in degrading the ocean environment and threatening its inhabitants. Creating a rising tide
of plastic water, Charzewski and Ludwig’s site-specific installation offers the viewer a glimpse
into the future, as if there was no more clear water in the ocean, but only seas of broken-down
plastic and their one remaining inhabitant.
JANE EYRE
By Polly Teale
Adapted from the novel by Charlotte Brontë
October 7 – 10 at 8 p.m.
October 11 at 2 p.m.
JOHNSON THEATRE
A gripping version of this Charlotte Brontë classic novel, “Jane Eyre” is a
psychological and visceral theatrical experience that suggests Jane’s suppressed
feelings are manifest in Rochester’s first wife, Bertha, the madwoman-in-theattic. Deftly adapted and conceived by Polly Teale, this production masterfully
goes beyond the story we know and reveals the real Jane Eyre.

filmmakers travel to various locations around the world — from deserts, to tanneries,
to one of the biggest dams in the world — to showcase how the liquid shapes
people’s lives, as well as how humanity affects this precious resource. A free global
cultural event, the screening of “Watermark” is open to the public and sponsored by

RUTLEDGE GALLERY
JOHNSON THEATRE
Kristin Smith Skees presents her conceptual photographs that play
on traditional ideas of portraiture by concealing her subjects in
knitted “cozies.” The cozies are custom made for each person, turning
them into humorous human-shaped stand-ins for themselves. While
the cozies add a layer of ambiguity and tension, the photographs’
colors, patterns, objects and poses create meaning and construct
identity. Ultimately, the photographs reveal to us our own ideas of
identity and self and the ways in which our closest relationships can
often walk the fine line between loving and smothering like an illfitting handmade sweater.
See the work of tomorrow’s professional choreographers

choreographic talents of senior dance majors.

VOICES — Cat Del Buono
January 20 – March 11, 2016
Opening Reception, January 22, 2016, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Free and open to the public
ELIZABETH DUNLAP PATRICK GALLERY
“Voices” is an exhibition designed to draw attention to domestic violence, eradicate
the silence that surrounds it, and empower survivors. On 20 small video monitors,
anonymous domestic violence survivors recount personal traumas. As a collection, the
concert of voices creates a symphony of incomprehensible words — the viewer must
come close to hear each narrative clearly. Del Buono’s installation reminds audiences
that there are real human beings behind the statistics. Del Buono will work with local
organizations to capture the personal experiences of women in our community as part of
the installation.

Message from the Dean
As Dean of the College of Visual and
Performing Arts, I am very pleased to
welcome you to the Arts at Winthrop
and share our schedule of public
offerings for 2015-16.
One of the unique aspects of our
college is our emphasis on establishing
partnerships and collaborations that extend our reach and help
our students connect with organizations and individuals that exist
in the larger world beyond the spaces in which they traditionally
work. By fostering collaboration, attracting visitors to our events
and taking part in activities that serve our communities, our hope
is that our students truly understand that the arts and culture are
vital components to community, economic development, public
education and quality of life. Your active participation in the Arts at
Winthrop plays a significant role as well. We hope that the range
and diversity of our offerings listed in the calendar stimulate your
interest and that you make plans to attend as many activities as
possible.
I also invite you to consider becoming a CVPA donor and support
the Arts at Winthrop. A donation at any level to any of our
directed or undirected funds helps to support a variety of student
scholarships, guest artists and speakers and arts programming.
I encourage you to visit our website, www.winthrop.edu/arts, and
learn more about the college and its many programs and activities.
We update the site regularly, and there are likeIy to be many more
events listed online that are not included in the printed calendar. I
look forward to seeing you this year.
David Wohl, Dean
College of Visual and Performing Arts
WINTHROP UNIVERSITY FRIENDS OF THE ARTS
Your donation to the Arts at Winthrop allows us to
maintain and strengthen our nationally accredited
programs in dance, design, fine arts, music and theatre
by supporting student scholarships, guest artists, master
classes and diverse arts programming. Be a Friend of the
Arts.
THE MASTER OF ARTS IN ARTS
ADMINISTRATION
is a low-residency program designed for individuals with
experience in non-profit arts organizations who seek to
enhance their effectiveness and advance their ongoing
careers as arts administration professionals. The program
provides training in management, leadership, advocacy,
sustainability, community engagement, marketing and
entrepreneurship. Graduates of the program are employed
in all arts fields and many have attained executive-level
positions. THE DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN
manages professional B.F.A. programs of study in interior
design and visual communication design, which includes
tracks in graphic design and illustration. Both programs
are fully accredited and have the reputation of being
among the most respected of these programs of study in
the Southeast. With an employment rate of 95 percent,
graduates of the programs can be found in the Carolinas
region, as well as in major metropolitan markets including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago.
THE DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS
places a high value on students learning how to work
creatively and collaboratively within their communities.
The programs prepare students for today’s challenges
technically, aesthetically and intellectually. Students leave
the program with a body of work reflective of professional
studio, art education and art history standards.
THE DEAN’S FUND
is an unrestricted fund that gives the College of Visual and
Performing Arts flexibility to address priorities, develop
new initiatives and provide assistance to students and
faculty in the form of scholarships, research opportunities,
professional development activities and travel to academic
conferences and workshops.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
enjoys a long and distinguished history as an outstanding
music program and accredited institutional member of the
National Association of Schools of Music since 1940.
Students have an opportunity to perform as a soloist or in
25 renowned ensembles, to teach music incorporating the
latest methodologies, and to compose music. Nearly 200
undergraduate and graduate students pursue a quality and
varied curriculum in the six degree programs offered
through the department.
WINTHROP UNIVERSITY GALLERIES
presents up to 18 professional, faculty and student
exhibitions annually and offers accompanying educational
programs, visiting artists and opening receptions to inspire
and enrich the lives of Winthrop students, faculty, staff
and regional audiences. The Galleries have enjoyed
regional recognition and continue to strive to serve the
campus and community by promoting academic excellence and human understanding through visual arts, media
arts and design.
THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE
has served the campus for more than fifty years and offers
more than a dozen theatre and dance productions
annually, including dance performances, musicals,
full-length dramas, one-acts and professional productions
in collaboration with Shakespeare Carolina each summer.
Small class sizes mean individualized attention and
students choreograph/direct a majority of the productions.
GIVING
to a specific area in the arts provides its own benefits.
Please visit www.winthrop.edu/cvpa/givetothearts to learn
how your donation will directly benefit your choice of
program.
